Our group wanted to combine punk instruments and its instrumental composition with the use of soft, female pop style vocals to create a song. We used two electric guitars, a bass guitar, drums and two vocalists to achieve this.

One development we used in the song was to add in another electric guitar over the guitar playing broken chords, which is common for pop-punk bands.

Another development was the use of both a guitar and a drum solo to give the song more of a punk aspect. I think this helped to add more structure to the song and made it feel more punk with how heavy it was.

The performance

The song first opens on the lead electric guitar playing the chords as broken arpeggio notes for four bars, and the other guitar following by playing the same chords as a single strum. The drums then play a fill on the snare and hi-hat where the bass guitar joins in after. We then lead into the lead guitar is strumming the chords frequently with the drums using fills for a few bars, and going back into arpeggio for the verse where the vocals begin. The verse lasts for sixteen bars, where the drums play another fill at the start of the fifteenth to follow through into the chorus. In the chorus, the chords played on both guitars as well as the notes played on the bass change. The chorus is composed to be louder and more noticeable than the verses, with the lyrics being sung louder and the guitar strumming being heavier along with a heavier drum pattern. The chorus then goes back into another verse, and then a drum solo that plays for eight bars. Immediately after is a guitar solo also playing for another eight bars of the song. The dynamics then fall for a slightly softer repeat of the chorus as the end of the song. Here, the final note it held on the vocals and the guitars to let the song ring out in order to end it.

Prior to performing, we said that our song is based around being stylised as pop-punk. I would personally say that we achieved this in our performance through the instruments and typical pop-punk composition to match heavy instrumentation to softer, female vocals, similar to bands like that of PVRIS or Paramore. Consequently, I would say that we developed a creative song that was extremely representative of the traits of the style we had chosen to use.

Our class said that the song sounded pop-punk which is what we were aiming for. To improve, they said that the levels of the room needed sorting as the microphones were fairly quiet. I agree with this, though we did all we could at the time to sort the microphone levels as there were technical difficulties in the room that we had we used. I also think that we could have added in a bridge to change the structure a little too, making it more exciting rather than having the frequent repetition of the chorus.

I would say that a strength of mine was keeping the guitar in time along with the drums in term of the structure of the song, as the drums have various fills leading from the verses to the chorus. To improve, I feel that the bass guitar could have used some sort of effect through the amp to give the more stylistic idea of pop-punk in the song. An example of this could be to use reverb or add more bass or gain to make it heavier throughout the song.

Overall, I would say that we worked well to use features of pop-punk to successfully use that style in the song. Though, we could have improved by fixing the levels in the room so that the vocals could be heard better, as they are a main focus of the song. A bridge would have been an additional improvement too as it would have expanded on the variation of the song's structure.
