General information about my students. What are their cultural backgrounds? How are they diverse in other ways? My relationship with them? How do they interact with each others.

I teach in a secondary school, namely a Cooking school preparing students to be chefs, receptionists, barmen, sommeliers, maitre de salle, etc. My students' background is so diverse as they come from middle-class families and very few parents own an university degree. Students knowledge in general is quite poor but they have a great energy when it comes to practical skills, when they have to perform something they will do in their future job. Their command of foreign languages is quite mediocre but they strive to learn them because they know it is a must nowadays. Their mutual relationship is based on respect and friendship and so is my relationship with them. We work together to develop self-esteem and to encourage cultural exchanges between different viewpoints, habits and traditions.

I fully agree with Alicia and Erika about the importance of sharing different cultural backgrounds to achieve a mutual understanding of diverse but interesting realities. I find the idea of asking grandparents information about their young days and about their cultural growth absolutely grand. Collecting ideas and memories can help students to feel more confident when facing life itself, the deeds of their ancestors can become a path to be followed in their education, a challenge that will surely make them stronger. The use of multimedia, internet, videos can provide a huge amont of material giving them an unmissable chance to reconnect with the past while creating their next future.

The importance of multilinguality in school

I found the videos about multilinguality very interesting and inspiring for my approach to different students and languages at school. I have some students coming from Morocco who do not speak other languages than Arabic and French. This fact caused problems to other teachers teaching Italian or maths, being myself a teacher of French and English I have so often helped these students to understand the language of instructions enabling them to carry out their assignements and to be successful in their school activities. It is also important to embrace their mother tongue but at the same time as they are attending a school in Italy they have to face the fact that learning the language of the host country is important for their fully growth as individuals. Multilinguality is the key to face the challenges of this century both at a cultural and working level so having staff members in school speaking a variety of languages is now a great opportunity to enhance and encourage students to interact among them in several languages, when different cultures cohesist then different languages must too

Privilege what is this?

I appreciated the video so much, it gave me some hints on how to handle the topic of privilege with my students. As a matter of fact all students, and teachers as well, come from different social backgrounds, their lives have taken on different directions due to their peculiar experiences with family and society in general, it is very important to arise awareness among students and youngsters on the fact that having privileges or not having them is just a way to discover a inner force, those who have no privileges and so must fight to reach the top of the social scale are the same persons who develop a great personality, a sense of brotherhood that makes them inter-cultural individuals, I will work on my students in class using the good paractices seen in the video to encourage inclusiveness and mutual understanding among them, I am sure this will lead to a higher level of cohesion.
