The White Room
"I've read many more books than you. It doesn't matter how many you've read. I've read more. Believe me I've had the time.
In my White room, against my white walls, on my glistening white bookshelves, book spines provide the only color. The books are all brand-new hardcovers- no germs secondhand softcovers for me. They come from Outside, decontaminated and vacuum- sealed in plastic wrap.I would like to see the machine that does this. I imagine each book traveling on a white conveyor belt toward rectangular white stations where robotic white arms dust, scrape, spray, and otherwise sterilize it until it's finally deemed clean enough to come to me. When a new book arrives, my first task is to remove the wrapping, a process that involves scissors and more than one broken nail. My second task is to write my name on the inside front cover."

Important Parts

An important part in the story is when Olly and Madeline meet for the fist time. This is very important because it is very rare for her to get to see people in person as well as the fact that she has her first friend she's every really met. Another impactful part of the story is when Carla gets fired. This affects Madeline because one of the only people she could talk too and knew everything about her and has now been taken away. This also ruins the relationship even more because now she is even more mad at her and can no longer talk to Olly her only real friend. A important part is also when Madeline runs away, this is a huge step for her to choose to see the world when she knows she will most likely die from it. Lastly but very importantly is when she gets the letter from Hawaii doctors saying they do not believe she has the condition and was miss diagnosed. This causes her to find out that her life had been pretty much taken from her by her mother which completely tears apart there relationship and she learns a lot more about herself that she never knew before.

(pg.181)
Madeline discovers that being happy are two different things and she would rather die living than live happily.
"She seems OK with the pills."(pg.184) This is when Madeline lies to Olly about having pills that will keep her alive.

There are a few ironic moments in this book and one is the fact that her nurse who is supposed to keeping her safe and protected all this time lets in Olly who could possibly kill her.
That creates situational irony in the story. Another piece of irony is dramatic because we know as the readers Maddie does not have pills to keep herself safe for the two days but Olly the other main character does not know this. Another peace of irony dramatic that we know Madeline is talking to Olly but her mom does not know this.

"His voice overflowing with optimism."(pg.185) In this personification Olly is very optimistic in the way he had asked Carla his question.
"His eyes are a clear summer-blue lake that I can't see the bottom." (pg. 223) This metaphor compares his eyes to a lake.
"Me in love would be like a food critic with no taste buds."(pg.79) This was a simile was to tell Carla that it would be pointless and there would be no hope of her falling in love.
"He looks like a starving man." (pg.206) this is a simile comparing Olly to a person starving because he looks desperate.
"Above clouds have hidden the moon." (pg. 229) This personification is describing how clouds are covering the moon so you can't see it.

Towards the middle when she starts to hang out with Olly secretly and eventually go to Hawaii with him the mood changes to more light-hearted. This is because it makes you happy when she is getting to explore the world for the first time. towards the end the mood is more tense because you are very worried she will not recover from going outside.

I connect the part Maddie finds out that her mother has lied about her disease to keep her to herself like the movie tangled where her fake mother keeps her in a tower lying to her saying it is dangerous outside. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip_0CFKTO9E
I also connect this to the movie the Midnight Sun because she is also allergic to an outside thing, the sun, forcing her to spend most of her time trapped inside like Maddie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TX6eK5hz6g
Another connection I can make to this is too Romeo and Juliet because like Maddie and Olly they fall in love together in harsh circumstances that make it hard to be together. http://shakespeare.mit.edu/romeo_juliet/full.html
