In Topic 1, I learned that when researchers plan on whom to observe, they must consider how to obtain a data that is not biased and consider that results may be affected due to population demographics. Topic 2 discussed that nonexperimental studies observe participants in order to describe them as they naturally exist without experimental intervention. In Topic 3, It was stated that causal comparative studies have more potential pitfalls than experimental studies while Topic 4 introduced the different features of qualitative and quantitative research. Finally, Topic 5 explained that quantitative variables can be categorical and the stated the importance of creating categories that will have each respondent belong to one category.

For example, Topic 12 presented different steps to take in order to prevent psychological and physical harm to subjects. In addition, it discussed different considerations that must be taken in regard to ethics such as keeping the participants information confidential. Topic 14 stated that there are three ways in which a review of literature can help you aside from assisting in identifying a testable hypothesis. First, you may identify measuring tools called instruments. Second, you can avoid dead ends if a method has already been proved not useful. Last, you can learn how to write research reports by paying attention to the style and organization of other authors. Finally, part of this module had us take an epistemology quiz that helped me understand that not everyone views the world the same way. Consequently, research is affected by these multiple perspectives.

After viewing the videos and reviewing tips on APA format, I began to apply what I learned while searching databases in the NGL library. Those with little to no experience in grant writing, such as myself, would find the information discussed in these webinars helpful. One important takeaway from the videos is the importance of including goals and objectives in the proposal. I learned that the amount of goals included in the grant must be kept to a maximum of 2-3 to prevent the project from being unmanageable. Dr. Rockis shared an acronym to remember the characteristics of an objective. It was one of the lengthiest modules to complete because it required reading multiple articles and deciding which information should be included in my literature review to provide readers with relevant and valid information. Someone not familiar with research should keep in mind that all information included should be free from your own opinions and focus on presenting valid information and facts. When writing the methods of data collection for my research, I found it very helpful to review my notes from the Patten readings. Especially the topics that included the information about the differences between quantitative and qualitative data collection. I learned that the proper organization of a proposal includes:

  • Recommendations for further research

People who are not researchers would find it helpful to write a research proposal to look for errors of thought as well as claiming the limitations that this study may face. In addition, in this module I was able to review a research proposal from a classmate. It was helpful to learn from research proposals written by others.
