1. The first cartoon is Brezhnev closing citizens eyes, ears and mouth. This cartoon shows that people were not allowed to portray anything bad about communism or they would be punished. The last image in this has Brezhnev standing on the citizen, this shows that they were put at high risk by speaking badly about communism.

2. The second cartoon shows two workers and one makes a joke about US citizens voting and the other worker gets very confused. This is to show that citizens were kept from the truth and barely even knew how to vote because they were hidden from it all.

5. The fifth cartoon has a car that has its parts thrown all over the ground and the car is labeled "Soviet Economy". Next to the car is a worker saying "now comes the tricky part". This shows that it was easy for the economy to fall apart but it will be extremely hard to put it back together.

2. This picture depicts a man and woman working and having a conversation about voting. The man sees voting as this extra weight on the American's shoulders and the woman does not even know what voting is. This shows how repressive Soviet society was and how little freedom the people had.
3. This image shows two rows of men (they look like they are in a meeting) talking about having a new leader. All of the men look the same, and they mention that "one of [us] will have to do." That shows how each of the Soviet leaders (before Gorbachev) were the same and had the same oppressive ideas.
7. This picture shows Gorbachev knocking down a row of dominos. This picture resembles how when Gorbachev made one small action, everything else changed (similar to a domino effect). Gorbachev also seems to have a smirk on his face, so he know what he is doing and is hoping to make Soviet society better (also, the dominos are in the Soviet's symbol and represent the Soviet Union).

1. i believe the first cartoon represents how controlled the citizens are and how the government shelters the soviet citizens from the rest of the world. it also shows how the government doesn't let the outside world "hear, see, or speak" about the soviet union and nobody really knows what's actually going on behind the borders of the soviet union.
2. the third cartoon talks about the need for a new, young leader to help change the economy, but the old man talking says that one of us will have to do, and is referring to the audience of older men that all look the exact same. this depicts how the soviet union has shaped every citizen to be the exact same and how it is near impossible to escape the cycle, because everyone has learned the same values.
3. the second cartoon depicts how the soviet union citizens don't actually have a say in the voting process. it also shows how the soviet citizens don't seem to understand anything about the american government or voting system, which further illustrates how sheltered the soviet citizens are.

1. I chose the first one hehe. So in the first cartoon, from left to right you have Western Press, Soviet Citizens, and Dissidents. There is a monkey covering the eyes of the western press person and I think it is doing that because the western press is on the outside of everything and kind of "blind" to everything that is going on. The second monkey is plugging the ears of the Soviet citizens because they do not know what the government is doing and it is like they can't listen to what the government has to say. The last monkey is stepping on the dissidents because they appear to be irrelevant for what they believe in.
2. The next one I chose is the 6th one. In it you have little children (aka countries) on halloween and instead of yelling trick or treat they are yelling freedom. Then the person handing out the candy or reforms is the USSR. It is displaying that the USSR is just handing out reforms to everyone.
3. I chose the last one because the person is shown kicking down dominoes. However, when he kicks one down, everything else has to go down too because of the effect. The dominoes display everything going down in a series of events in Russia.

#2- In this cartoon, it is depicting how the citizens have no say and are unable to interact in the voting system. The Russians see it more as a burden as opposed to a right that most people enjoy.
#3- In this cartoon, it is implying that while the government want a young and diverse leader, they are lacking in that area. Because all of the men look the exact same, it's showing that there is no diversity within the government
#5- This cartoon is showing how corrupt and broken down the Soviet economy is at the moment. The car is meant to be the economy, so they are showing the destruction of it by having necessary parts of the car lying in the ground. The "tricky part" is going to be putting the car back together. The economy has broken down so much that it will be extremely hard to put it back together.

1. #2 I believe that the second cartoon is trying to say that the Soviet citizens have no clue how the Americans government works and how voting works. They think that having the choice of voting is bad because their own government doesn't give them the chance to even express their opinions.
2. #6 I believe that the sixth cartoon is trying to say that other countries are asking the Soviet Union for their freedom. The young children represent the other countries and they are asking for freedom instead of candy for halloween. The adult is the USSAR and instead of handing out the freedom that they want, he is hading out reforms.
3. #3 I believe that cartoon number three is trying to show how un unique the Soviet government is. Then men in the government all look the exact same and they are looking for someone new and younger. This shows how the Soviet Union is lacking in diversity.

the 5th one shows how the soviet economy has kind of fallen apart and many parts of it are scattered throughout the country. The person in the cartoon states, " now comes the tricky part", portraying that it is going to be difficult to build the country back together. The broken parts are going to be hard to bring back together.

the second one shows the lack of particaption of the citizens within the government. As one citizen states, "whats a voting both," it shows how she is unaware of what is going on, for she is not involved with anything economically or in the government. Since the Americans have a voting system, they might think that since no one votes in their society, that it is bad for the Americans.

the third one is showing that they are in need for something new and different, but they lack any connection to someone they might make a difference. It is shown in the picture that all the men look the same and are all in search for something new. This shows that there is no diversity and no interaction with different and new faces. They are unaware of new people that could make a strong difference.

They have yet to see this freedom however and they don't know the positives of having your own say in the government because everything has been chosen for them already.
2. #7
I think this cartoon shows how Gorbachev unintentionally started the fall of communism. By making reforms, he started the domino affect that ended communism in the Soviet Union.
3. #6
This cartoon shows how people just want change and freedom. Even kids

They feel bad for the Americans because they have to make an awful choice of who to pick in office.
- the second to last cartoon shows kids at a mans door saying trick or treat. The man says freedom and it shows that they don't have any freedom and the idea of it is a trick.
- the third to last one shows a car above a man and all of the parts beneath the car surrounding the man. this is showing that they had everything they needed to thrive but the government had placed the plans or freedom needed to advance above them and out of their control.

1. #5: In this cartoon, the broken, taken apart car represents the soviet economy and the man is Gorbachev and it represents that the "tricky part" is being able to put the economy back together in a well functioning way.
2. #1: In this cartoon, when the big man says "see no" he is covering the eyes of a western reporter. This is significant becaues they don't want the west to see what is really happening in the soviet Union because then they would see how awful communism is. When the big man is putting his fingers in the ear of a soviet person and saying "hear no". The significance of this is that the soviet government doesn't want the soviet people to find out what life is like in the west. Because then the people would begin to realize how bad their society is. When the big man says "speak no" and is crushing the man with a sign that means to revolt. Its important because people aren't allowed to speak out against the government.

1. In the first cartoon with Brezhnev since Brezhnev is evil, they used the hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil monkeys to depict and make fun of him. Under Brezhnev, are Soviet citizens and they are being controlled by Brezhnev. He is playing with them like puppets. He is covering the first persons eyes, blinding them from the world around them, plugging citizens ears so that they can't hear anything from other countries and stomping on someone trying to speak up or protest against him not even allowing him to speak.
2. In the one with the car, it shows Gorbachev holding tools to fix the car. The car is completely stripped down and frail looking, showing the state in which the Soviet Union was at the time. Around him are a bunch of small random parts showing how hard it is going to be to put all the small parts and issues back together to create a stronger society.
3. In the trick or treat cartoon, it shows a person representing Gorbachev handing out candy that symbolizes the reforms he made for everyone. As he is giving out the candy, he is saying freedom showing how he created freedom for the Soviets.

1. The second cartoon made in 1980:
It is of two people talking about the US voting system. The man is saying that the Americans have choices, he and most of the Soviet Union have never really had any choice, they find it scary rather then a right. The woman's response depicts the realities of living in the Soviet Union and the lack of information about the rest of the world.
2. The third cartoon is showing how similar all the men in the government are. They all look the same, it is a reflection of how in 1982 all the people in the government are old and dying out. They want a young leader but none of them are that.
3. The final picture shows Gorbachev breaking down the communist soviet union. He did not start out wanting to break down communism but slowly he changed policies and changed the economy. He did made small changes that slowly made communism as a whole break down.

It may trick the people onto think change could come.
4- in the fourth one, it shows how breshnev is above the poeple. it also depicts that the poelp cant do anything to loud or fun pr else he will step on them. but they stilll have to provide for him.

I chose the second second cartoon. I think this cartoon demonstrates how their freedom has been taken away and how the government choses for the people. During this time, people no longer had the option to chose for themselves because the government always chose for them. This cartoon also shows the ignorance among the people, thinking it is better to be controlled with not much freedom, instead of having complete freedom and the right to have a choice which shows that people go along with and believe whatever they are taught especially when the government says what to do.
2) I chose the 5th cartoon. In this cartoon it shows a car with its parts everywhere, all messed up and the person who is trying to put it together says here is the tricky part. It shoes how they made all these reforms, but they don't work apart from each other, like parts of a car they need each other. And the hardest part is actually putting the reforms together.

The Gorillas are the government and they are keeping the people from hearing, seeing, and speaking, which is their freedom.
2. This cartoon is showing two maids walking and one is saying how hard it must be for americans to make a decision when voting. Then other one doesn't even know what a voting booth is because the society has been so blinded to voting.
3. This cartoon is representing the dullness of the society due to communism. It is making all the leaders the same, and the members of the society the same. They lack in diversity
