Samantha B. Goricho

Gr. 10 Br. Richard Duerr FSC

July 4, 2025

Greek and Philippine literature share common qualities such as strong oral traditions, the use of mythology, and the expression of cultural values. Both literatures began through storytelling passed down from generation to generation before being written. Greek literature features gods and heroes like Zeus and Hercules, while Philippine literature includes mythological figures such as Bathala and Maria Makiling. They both aim to teach moral lessons like bravery, loyalty, and love for one’s homeland. However, Greek literature is more influenced by philosophy and often explores themes like fate, heroism, and the relationship between gods and humans. Therefore, Philippine literature reflects colonial history, indigenous culture, and real-life social struggles. While Greek works are known for deep philosophical thought, Philippine works focus more on emotional and community-centered experiences.

To start off, Greek and Philippine literary pieces' values have some similarities that I have observed. Brave Heroes: Both Greek and Philippine stories have heroes who are courageous and brave. They face tough challenges to help their people or achieve great things.

Secondly, in both literatures, there's a strong idea that some things are meant to happen, like fate. Characters often can't change what's decided for them.

And the third similarity, both kinds of stories show how important family is. People often make sacrifices for their loved ones.

What's Different between them?

Greek stories often focus on one main person's journey and their mistakes. Philippine stories, though, usually focus on what's good for the whole group, with heroes helping everyone, although there may be exceptions.

Greek gods are often bossy and mess with human lives for their own reasons. Philippine gods and spirits are more connected to nature, often protecting things and what's important to them.

Greek literature explores deep thoughts and big questions. Philippine literature tends to share practical lessons for life and keeps old stories alive by telling them.
