In 'the prisoner of the hell planet', Artie's cold reaction to his mother suggests that he did not like his mother that much, and treats her disrespectfully. He has his hand on Anja's shoulder and doesn't look angry at all.
His attitude towards her contrasts with his attitude towards Lucia and later with Mala, and it makes it easy for the readers to observe changes in his personality after her suicide, using this as a base.

He clearly  wants to help her, saying he ‘need’ s her. And in the panel on bottom right it shows him reminiscing about back then, that they’ll survive together, even though, he ultimately ended up without her.
