He started off with a classical music up until now and currently and has performed in many different places. There are lots of challenges in learning classical music and there was one time that he felt like he couldn't move on with it, he planned to drop the classical music and stop playing instrument. However, as time goes by, by hearing from people's opinions, listening to videos, and looking at other people plays, his mindset changes and he continues to study it deeper.

In this time, as he takes music as his major which is called CMAT, he learns lots of things such as new styles of playing, new theory that has never been thought before, and also meeting new people and getting new experiences and techniques. There will be tough challenges ahead as he step into a higher level, but he will always try to do his best and also improving himself to become a better one!

Born and raised in Malaysia, Grace has always been musically inclined and classically trained since her early days. She played her first recital in Jakarta, Indonesia while she was living there for four years. She has been exposed to all kinds of music and wants to use her talent into good use.

As a musician, Grace has always been sure of pursuing music and seeing a future in the music industry. However, as she explores other work experiences, she found her passion in fitness and found ways of working as a fitness instructor while putting her music to work. In her two years of teaching spin while studying music, she has seen DJs from Malaysia who teaches spin, using their remixes to teach their classes. It is just as inspiring when she can make her music and share it within the fitness industry.

Grace has also been serving in the Worship team since she was thirteen years old in her previous church and currently at (SS Gospel Centre) as their keyboardist and pianist. As a pianist, she is honored for being able to play alongside 'Yi Shien' the guitarist from 'Lost Spaces', a band that is one of Malaysia's biggest music sensations.

Gospel music is essentially a sub-genre of spiritual and Christian music that has a mixture of different styles of the pop genres in Christian music. In the current situation, the black American gospel dominates the genre. This evidence can be found in social media, the most common platform is youtube. What is the gospel? It can be defined that ‘good news that Jesus is coming to earth. Many gospel music come from traditional church hymns, for example, 'Amazing Grace', it's called Soweto Gospel choir (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoJz2SANTyo). This is one of the examples of gospel music without instrumentalists. As the year goes by, the gospel is getting more combinations of genres, like ragtime, country music, and blues, which is more entertaining and unique.

The first song we chose was "Born To Praise" by Planetshakers and we are a band of five. So we came up with the name 'Planetonix' because it was a combination of our first pick of all the Christian band and the "tonix" idea came from the term pentatonic also known as a scale with five notes. In addition to how our name came about, the current acapella band 'Pentatonix' had a similar number and type (1 woman and 4 men).

It's always an honor to bless people with God's word. As individuals, we have all come together believing in the same faith and understanding the meaning to play gospel music as a band. There is always a pure difference when it comes to when performing as a band and worshiping as a band. We hope to encourage everyone to appreciate and understand what gospel music is.

Nathanael is a Jamaican drummer that has been playing for around a decade while gaining experience and training throughout his years being classically trained in the piano and gaining a Grade 5 Trinity DrumKit certification. He has been exposed to many styles of music while serving in the praise and worship team at his church in Brunei while also delving into things like Jazz Band in his school.

During his time at Jerudong International School, the well-funded arts programme allowed him to also be a drummer in 6 large productions and musicals in the span of 4 years while also producing and mixing his own music. He has also started to branch out into playing other instruments like the guitar and bass due to being asked to be a stand-in performer on multiple occasions which has helped his ear be able to catch onto and learn songs quickly. Additionally, he also took up the double bass to stand in for a former educator that had left the JIS orchestra for 5 months.

With his love for music, he constantly tries to improve his technique and expand his repertoire to be able to be a better musician and better person!

In a heavily rhythm-driven song like Born To Praise, the drums have a larger presence.

Andy’s playing influences stem from drummers like “Mike Webber, also Tony Royster, Dave Weckl, growing up also Travis Barker, Big Mike Clemons” (Drummer, 2014, para. 1). Tony Royster’s influence can definitely be heard during fills with signature transient, high-pitch toms fills paired with the punchy kick (https://youtu.be/0IhfxSljBao?t=147)

Drummer, W.

Due to the rhythmical weight that is exhibited in this song the bass and drums share a symbiotic relationship where they both have to be rhythmically tight in order to provide an additive impact in anticipations and unison hits. An example of this is near the end of the Rap section where the kick and the bass correspond together in unison then in the pre-chorus, the bass follows the snare hits happening every crotchet beat.

I believe an influence for this type of playing in the song Born To Praise is the 1980’s funk where there is a steady 8th on the hi-hat and the kick follows the baseline and introduces anticipations and syncopation to the rhythmic patterns. A feature of drums in 80’s Funk is how the drumbeat rarely changes during a section unless there are accents and hits that the whole band plays together. This can be heard in songs like “Get Down On It - Kool & The Gang” this feature is also heard in earlier 70’s disco songs like “Stayin Alive - Bee Gees” or “Brick House - Commodores”

In this instance, in the chorus, there is a drum pattern that conveys a driving crotchet kick over quaver hi-hats and a snare hit on the 2 & 4 of the bar and this is universally done throughout all of the choruses.

I realized that I had altered this pattern to follow more of a 70’s disco feel that slightly imitates the electric guitar’s 16th percussive strumming by playing a loose Hi-Hat every “and” of the bar. This is heard in 70’s disco songs like “Heart Of Glass - Blondie”

Its up-and-down strokes enable fast-paced passages to be played fluidly - most scale runs and solos are accomplished with this method.

This advanced technology enables flurries of light-speed notes, and it’s used almost exclusively for playing large arpeggios quickly and fluidly. The notes are sounded with a sweeping motion of the pick--somewhat like strumming, only each note is articulated separately rather than together as a chord. It’s tough to master, but once you get the hang of it, it’s dazzlingly impressive. Sweep picking often appear in metal solo parts.

Example video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eJZGTedU6o
In this video, you can hear the sweep picking sound from (0.16) onwards.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyhffJlGTR0
This is the example of the video with tab and physical people playing sweeping technique at (7:29).

Language is never a barrier when it comes to having a song sung in a different language. In this cover of Born To Praise, it is sung in Chinese and the way they've arranged the style is pretty close to the original recording.

This is one not to miss and that is if you listen closely to the music only, the synth and piano has a clear harmonisation between the two as well as the vocalist. As stated in "What does Gospel music constitute?" One of it is how strong harmonisation is used. Adding on to that, some solo parts on the keys sounded improvised and changed based on their own arrangement.

The presence of characteristics of disco-funk and progressive/alternative genres could be noticed in this song. To start with, let's observe the bass line in the verse. The main rhythm pattern of the verse is a two bars phrase with plucks appearing on:

The downbeat of the first beat,

Upbeat of the second,

Downbeat of the fifth

Upbeat of the sixth,

And the downbeat of the eighth.

In the chorus, the feel and rhythmic pattern of the verse are maintained and enhanced. The two bars phrase is now shortened into one, but with the plucks:

Also appearing on the first beat (dotted quaver),

Added at the end of the first beat (semiquaver),

On the upbeat of the second, twice (semiquavers),

On the upbeat of the third,

And on the "e" of the fourth beat ("4-e-and-a").

This kind of rhythmic pattern is commonly used in disco-funk. Three disco-funk song examples with similar rhythmic patterns are Jungle Boogie (by Kool & the Gang, released in 1973), Let's Groove (by Earth, Wind, and Fire, released in 1981), and Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough (by Michael Jackson, 1979).

Next, unison attacks on unique places of the rhythmic meter could also be noticed during the rap and transitions from one section to another, and unison repeated phrases found on the bridge. This is most probably influenced by the Alternative/Progressive Rock genre: a subgenre of rock music that emphasizes ambitious compositions, experimentation, and musical virtuosity. Song examples of this genre are Heart of the Sunrise (by Yes, 1971), Money (by Pink Floyd, 1981), and Easy Money (by King Crimson, 1973).

Playing techniques found in this song are plucking, slap, and tremolo.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/alternative%20music

Andy Harrison's drum-kit setup consists of:

Yamaha Phoenix Kit.

10″, 12″, 14″, 16″ toms

22″ kick.

14×6″ DW top edge mahogany snare

14×7 DW collectors maple snare (Aux)

Dream Cymbals / Paiste Cymbals

<sup>
The transient, present nature of the kit helps it stand out amongst the cacophony of instruments when things do build-up and allows for tight, clean fills and precision hits. (Close-Up 2018 Conference Drum Cam with the same kit)

One thing for certain is that Andy definitely tunes his drum heads pretty high but I think with that Snarky Puppy (Larnell Lewis)/Tony Royster influence where they play complex rhythms with a large band, they tend to have that tighter/more pronounced sound.

Another observation is the sheer number of cymbals left at Andy's disposal. Although he knows how to use it well due to how the cymbals never come across as too overbearing and too up-front. This is due to how he uses fairly thin crash cymbals which have a loud attack but decay faster than thicker crashes. There's also a variety of China and Effect Crashes (Crashes with holes/defects) which allow contrast with the other crashes.

The 22' Yamaha kick drum offers a nice deep tone without too much of a ring. I do believe he uses an EVANS kick ring which effectively dampens the batter head of the kick and provides a sharper attack. The deep tone could be credited to the FOH engineer. But it definitely couples itself with the bass but isn't too boomy to overshadow the bassist but to complement his sonic attack.

One thing that is apparent is that the drums in the whole thing aren't meant to be in the forefront but are meant to be heard in their own way. This way is in the attack and transient part of the drumset but as a whole, it sits back most of the time with the bassist which is a stellar element of Gospel Music.

Drummer, W.

Above the picture there is a guy, his name is Jeannot Khor. He was born in KK, Sabah but grow up in KL because his parent got a new job after three months he pop out. He started learning piano at five years old, he started off with classical style. He used to perform quite an amount of time when he was young but he could not remember much of it because he used to be very blur (now he is still a blur guy).

When he was twelve years old, he decided to drop piano because he does not have an interest in classical piano and made his teacher so piss also because he never practice and always found excuses to skip classes. He stopped learning instruments for one year. When he was fourteen years old year-end, he decided to pick up the acoustic guitar because of his little passion for music. During that time, he just wanted to learn for fun and maybe could get a girlfriend by playing guitar. 2018 August, he took Rockschool grade 5 and pass the exam. At that time, he also picked up his piano back in contemporary style which was taught by his guitar teacher and won a competition in 2019. He does find hope to further study music because of the satisfaction. Moving on to 2022, he passes his pre-u and the only course he could enter is music from his three options.

It was struggling for him at first because he did not know what is DAW and he can play piano and guitar so he could not produce a song properly. After a year in CMAT, under the guidance of his friend and the environment in his cohort, he was enjoying learning music with his bunch of friends and felt comfortable around them. The spark of fire in music is still there, this applies when there are people guiding him and supporting him throughout the journey, he could not survive academics by himself.

Having a chance to perform as an e.guitarist is a very honorable chance because he had never learned an e.guitar yet and also did not perform an e.guitar. This journey shall give him a good chance to perform and increase the bonding with his bandmates.

Gospel music is grounded with dominant vocals that are supported by solid harmonies with Christian lyrics that contain devotional meanings. In most Christian songs, there are compositional techniques used, such as a call and response, imitation, pedal-note, and many more.

In the early days of Gospel music, rhythm is supported by the use of handclaps and foot stomps. Nowadays, there is a drum or Cajon to help keep the rhythm in place. It also depends on the type of hymns sung and what song is chosen.

"Born To Praise" and the other 14 tracks/songs were released together as an album titled #LetsGo on September 11, 2015. The album was aimed to encourage believers to move in action as what Jesus did to his disciples:

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
- Mark 16:15 (NIV).

Bringing believers to step out to God's commission, therefore its title is "Let's Go".

The song itself was written by Samantha Evans, Josh Ham, Andy Harrison, and Joth Hunt. It is based on these two Bible verses:

For through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.
- Colossians 1:16 (NLT)

The wild animals in the fields will thank me,
the jackals and owls, too,
for giving them water in the desert. Yes, I will make rivers in the dry wasteland so my chosen people can be refreshed. I have made Israel for myself, and they will someday honor me before the whole world.
- Isaiah 43:20-21 (NLT).

Its purpose is to invite the listeners to listen and follow God's lead in life and live life as a form of praise and worship unto Him.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lets_Go_(Planetshakers_album)
https://www.planetshakers.com/blog/devotional/letsgo-14-day-devotional/

The bass line played throughout the whole song is a repetition of a melodic phrase; which is the hook of the song ("Da Da Da"). It is played in unison with the electric guitars. Later in the chorus, this melodic phrase is sung together with the vocals/choir. This style of bass playing resembles the Alternative/Indie Pop genre. Song examples of this genre are Bad Guy (by Billie Eilish, 2019), Feel Good Inc. (by Gorillaz, 2005), and Reckless Serenade (by Arctic Monkeys, 2011).

However, the bass-playing style is different in the pre-chorus of the song: it plays the tonic of the chords on every downbeats of the rhythm. This style of downbeat focused rhythm resembles the Pop Rock genre. Song examples of this genre are Good 4 U (by Olivia Rodrigo, 2021), Smells Like Teen Spirit (by Nirvana, 1991), and Since U Been Gone (by Kelly Clarkson, 2004).

The drum heads offer a larger amount of resonance and transients don't spike out as much. Contrary to this the kit is quite small but offers a punchy transient.

Brendan utilizes Roland MIDI Dual triggers for his kit pieces like the snare and the kick which are connected to a drum machine that he uses to blend the acoustic and electronic sound together to create a bigger and more transient sound due to how they're normally playing for big crowds in huge open spaces and the samples help to uplift the transience which maintaining the decay and resonance the kit needs to fill the space. He also uses a Roland SPD-SX to run further samples like claps and other chimes that can all be programmed.

The kit offers a powerful force when all instruments come in together with the use of the many cymbals. The Hi-Hat is made up of two Jazz crash cymbals wedged together for the top and bottom pieces which gives a deeper darker tone contrary to the main piercing sound that Hi-Hats are known for.

I've combined the synth pad and also the grand piano sounds so that the piano sound itself is not too dry when being played.

What is a synth pad? A synth pad is a sustained chord generated by synthesizers. This pad is usually used in the same way as when we are using strings sounds. The way they are played is by holding the chords without playing notes individually. This would make a big difference when being used as a background filler to make the chord sound thicker and fuller. Most Churches now, especially Charismatic Churches use pads in their worship sessions due to the improvement of sounds in keyboards where we could also use plug-ins to choose a sound that fits the atmosphere.

Brendan Tan has been the drummer in Hillsong Young & Free since 2013 ultimately growing alongside the band and pulled his main influences from other drummers from his church growing up but also Thomas Armon Pridgen, Aaron Spears and Tony Royster Jr who are world-renowned American drummers known for their great rhythmic variety and control while having amazing "chops" (sophisticated fills) (Worship Drummer YT). It seems as being a gospel drummer you aren't expected to do much other than being the time-keeper of the band but drummers mainly use fills to diversify the drum beat which might be seen as monotonous.

For the verse/post-chorus, the main drum beat derives from an 80's classic rock/pop drum beat heard in songs like Billie Jean - Michael Jackson, Honky Tonk Woman -The Rolling Stones and November Rain - Guns N' Roses. These exhibit a constant 8th hi-hat or leading hand and the snare always landing on the 2 and 4 beats of the bar. Where in some cases the kick drum spacing can have a syncopated feel where it lands on the "and" of the 3. This is shown in this phrase where the leading right-hand plays constant 8ths and the snare always fall on the 2 and 4. But what is different is that the Kick rhythm follows the unison line used by the Guitar and Bass to "fill in" the spots that the snare doesn't occupy. This 4 bar phrase is repeated throughout when the ostinato is being played on the other rhythm instruments.

For the second drum phrase, it is pretty static where the groove is without any syncopation and the snare occupies a 16th roll and the kick and peddled hi-hat play on every 4th of the bar. This happens every time there is a Chorus.

This technique is normally used in songs to help crescendo to a louder part in the song (ie. the chorus) and is used for rhythmic and dynamic variance. Such can be heard during the bridge of All The Small Things - Blink 182

[Verse 1]

"From the moment that I wake up"
"You are right there with me"
"Doesn't matter what I go through, You're my breakthrough"
"You know everything about me"
"You heard every prayer that came from my heart"
"You love me"

The beginning of verse one is like a personal prayer; a reminder. As a believer, speaking to God directly can come from just a sentence, phrase, or Bible passage. When it says "Doesn't matter what I go through, You're my breakthrough. You know everything about me" - God knows our future but He wants us to come to him during good days and bad days. God wants our lives to be filled with overflowing love, mercy, and full of compassion. We have choices to make daily where we either respond to unsettling realities in fear and withdrawal or follow Him and know that we need Him to fill us with Love, Hope, and Peace. In reference & reflection: Matthew 25:35-36,40 (NIV).

[Verse 2]

"When I think of how You made me
It's amazing, I reflect Your beauty"
"Every moment that I'm living,
No counting Your thoughts towards me"
"Your grace woven through every part,
And You love me"

This is a reflection of life, how He gave us this life where we are made in His image. It stems from Genisis 1:27 (NIV) - "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."
The second line of verse two, "I reflect your beauty" - Does not represent physical beauty but how we live a Godly life. We live a life full of temptations and evil but when we stick close to God, we see more of Him; gracious, merciful, and His works.

[Chorus]

"I was made for worship and praise"
"To be lost in Your embrace"
"I was made to love You always"
"I'm born to praise"

What does it mean to worship and praise? Many think that it is just singing in church and being present in the house of the Lord, however, we do worship through music and songs. How we worship is also giving glory to God, remembering what He has done for us and how He has sacrificed his Son for us. Every Sunday in church, we break bread and wine. That is to remember why we worship. The word "worship" is an umbrella term for how you praise by giving honor to God. Worship comes in forms like loving, helping, and giving to others. Isaiah 43:21 (ESV) says "The people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise."

[Rap]

"The praise goes up, His presence comes down"
"Lift my voice to the Lord, when there's trouble all around"
"I was born to praise, living in His glory"
"Now I'm feeling the sun rays, walking on cloud nine
Life on the incline, living in God's dream, victory now mine"
"Shout it Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, shout it out"
"There's nothing like Him, nothing like Him"

As Christians, we have come to terms that we can never fight our battles alone, but in Christ who strengthens us, we can; Phillippians 4:13 (NKJV) "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me". In the second line, it says "Lift my voice to the Lord, when there's trouble all around". The name of Jesus is powerful, this is why we turn to God, especially in times of trouble. We have the authority to cast fears, and troubles away because Jesus has given it all to us. The last line cries out "Hallelujah", in other words, it means God be praised. It's an expression of rejoicing.

God has done lots of miracles and changed our lives. We must learn to keep moving forward and leave our past behind. The most important thing is to always persuade other friends to come to church to know the truth and help change the lives of others.
