I am not entirely sold on majoring in civil engineering, and these in depth videos along with others is helping me decide whether civil engineering specifically is really for me, and helps give me general advice on how to go about pursuing this career

UTSA History Club

I attended several history club meetings throughout the semester as an opportunity to see whether I want to major in history. The meetings consisted of lectures, trivia games, study sessions, and hangouts. Participating in these activities, and interacting with other students and faculty, I realized that I do not want to pursue a career in history, and prefer it as more of just a fun hobby to explore and learn about in my free time. These conversations with other students has also led me to wanting to simply pursue a minor in history, which can serve as a nice contrast to the rigorous coursework that will go into studying civil engineering

Linkedlin Learning

I created a Linkedlin account and explored Linkledin Learning, which is provided to me through UTSA. I've began with taking general courses, starting with an Interpersonal Communication course from Dorie Clark. This course provided tips on how to communicate in the workplace, with coworkers, supervisors, and how to handle tricky situations. Regardless of the field of work one enters, communication is essential to any work environment, which is why I chose to start with this one. At my current job I feel I communicate adequately with coworkers and leadership, but there is certainly room for improvement that this course provided useful tips on. One in particular was learning how to effectively make requests, rather than simply ordering people around.

This article gives a basic breakdown of a history major and the careers one can pursue with it. While I passionate about history and would most enjoy studying it at University, the career options, while broad and a gateway to many different paths, don't really suit my interests, and it makes me lean towards my safe pick for civil engineering.

This video was a basic list of majors that are worth it, and I found it reassuring to see engineering near the top of the list. My personal decision of choosing to major in civil engineering over my passion of history is mostly because I don't see a history degree being particularly worth it based on my research, despite studying it being more fulfilling to me. Engineering on the other hand will always be in demand, as this video points out and is a well paying job. It just serves for me as a safe job, and regarding civil engineering, I have enough interests in infrastructure and city planning where I feel I will have passion towards my career while also getting more out of it.

Texas Reality Check

Taking the Texas Reality Check helped me realize that a history degree is not for me, as the only career I would want to pursue with it is education, and the salaries in that field just would not be able to support the lifestyle I want, while just about all civil engineering salaries would.

Picking my Major

After the research that I've done over the semester, I've decided that I am going to declare my major in Civil Engineering rather than History. I have an interest in both, and while I am more passionate about history and would enjoy studying it more, when it comes to my adult career and the realisticness of the lifestyle I want to have, and the type of career I want to have, I'd rather major in civil engineering as I feel it would be more beneficial for me in life without completely sacrificing a passion for my career
