         <description><![CDATA[<div>The town of The Dalles was established 12 miles from Celilo Falls for the white settlers who came. The natives reluctantly agreed to be moved to different reservations which included the Yakama reservation, the Nez Peirce Reservation, and the Umatilla and Warm Spring reservations. Treaties said that they could come to the spots on the river to forage and fish yet most property owners would not let them.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1866 a salmon cannery opened and by 1883, 43 canneries were open all over the Columbia river.&nbsp; In 1894 a device called a fishing wheel that was used to scoop salmon out of the river without effort was invented. Soon, 76 wheels were working on the river. The natives who still fished at Celilo Falls and on the river fought with&nbsp; commercial fisherman for the best fishing spots.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Celilo Falls was purposely flooded an turned into Celilo Lake. All the reservations that used to fish at Celilo falls were paid for the loss of their prized fishing spots beforehand. According to the Northwest Power and Conservation Council, the total amount of money given to all four tribes added up to $26,88,395. Each tribe got a portion. The Yakama tribe received $15,019,640. The Warm Springs tribe gained $4,451,784. The Umatilla tribe was given $4,616,971. Finally was the Nez Perce tribe which obtained $2,800,000.</div>]]></description>
