Introduction :
We decided to talk about a volunteering experience for our work, hence why we are going to introduce you to an ecovolunteering wolf sanctuary located in Portugal.

Plan : First, we'll tell you a definition of "ecovolunteering" and give you the main facts you have to know about where it takes place. Then, we'll see the goal of this sanctuary but also the difficulties and skills you have to have to work and finally, we'll focus on the accomodations and what it costs to work for the sanctuary.

Definition: Ecovolunteering is a solidarity and participatory action that consist of helping, during one's free time, a project related to the preservation and enhancement of animal, plant, environmental and cultural diversity.

The place: situated in Portugal, more precisely in Greater Lisbon Area.

During your journey, you get to visit the city and it's surroundings and you can explore the rest of the country during your free weekends on your own or with the other helpers like for example the city of Belém, the neighborhood Alfama or the municipality Sintra. Once you arrive, a short introductory orientation is provided to help you not get lost during your time here.

While volunteering, you live and work within the wolf sanctuary (which is located near the capital). This sanctuary is made for Iberian wolves that were kept illegally in captivity and can no longer live in the wild. Now we'll go into more details and see what you can do during your time here.

II) Purpose and difficulty of the mission

This experience will allow us to gain experience in wildlife conservation and contribute to the conservation of wolves. Like we said before, on the first day the volunteers can visit Belém, Alfama or Sintra and they can use the free weekends to explore more of the country.

I will talk about the skills to have : Strong communication skills in English or Portuguese, a good physical condition, be able to work in a team and be able to execute tasks independently.

The volunteers will work Monday through Friday, seven hours a day. During the summer months, work may start earlier and end later, with a break during the hottest part of the day. After some morning work, weekends are free for volunteers.

What about volunteering ? : The reserve is a haven for wolves that can no longer live in the wild. That’s why, the volunteer must :

-prepare food, so he has to cut raw meat-feed the wolves

-check the water supply of the wolves (in summer at least three times a day),

-watch and observe wolves.

There is also forestry maintenance : like cutting down trees. Branches and materials must be removed. For example during the summer (May to October) volunteers participate in fire watch, which can include night patrols.

And there is Infrastructure maintenance: the volunteers should check enclosure’s walls and fences, and clean the pathways.

And it is forbidden to touch the wolves.

III) This program is unfortunately not free despite being a volunteer experience. But why do we have to pay for volunteering ?

This program is not just about coming to take care of the wolves. All your needs are taken care of. It includes transport, so the plane ticket and the taxi you have to take to get to the reserve, as well as accommodation, shared rooms in a hostel and the volunteers' house are made available to you with fully equipped kitchen. The only thing to your charge is the food, daily meals are not included in the programme fee.

In the end, the program costs between 500 and 850 euros depending on the during of your stay.

But also to participate in this program you must be at least 18 years old and no maximum limit.

In conclusion, you have to pay the price to live this experience abroad but it is cheaper than a basic trip and in addition you can live next to the wolves, take care of them for a good cause. And also train you in your english or portuguese with native Portuguese.
