Personal Recommendation from Ray Nunez, Association President at Johnson & Wales University Student Government

"Miss Erin Hall has truly been a pleasure to work with. I'm honored to say that we are a part of the 2015 College Leadership Rhode Island class together. From the very first session we shared, Erin's smile and bright personality became infectious throughout the room. She has an exceptional way of connecting with others on a personal level, which I'm positive will transfer well in her future in education. Erin is a proven dedicated and passionate student leader and has an extremely bright future ahead of her. I'm honored to be working with such a positive individual and I hope to continue to be a part of Erin's successes."

These are my top five strengths, according to the Clifton StrengthFinders Assessment.

These strengths play a key role in my professional and personal life. Professionally, I am ultimately looking to pursue a career in immigration education reform, specifically working with the refugee population in the United States. I am dedicated to restoring harmony in the lives of people who have experienced conflict, and believe that the best way to approach that task is through education. In looking for innovative ways to reach students of all backgrounds, I am both a passionate leader and an active team player; my final three strengths illustrate my work ethic both individually and as part of a group.

I am currently serving as Service Chair of the University of Rhode Island Newman Club, organizing philanthropy events around my campus and in the local community; I organized a lecture series to address several topics in Rhode Island's educational field for students in the URI School of Education; and, most significantly, I have participated in two mission trips to orphanages for mentally and physically disabled children in Nicaragua and am anticipating a third trip in the summer of 2016. These experiences have defined the current trajectory of my life, and helped me become the leader and life-long learner I am today.

My Philosophy of Teaching

I believe that teachers are the artists of society. They shape and mold new generations of society into the best they
think they can be. They are responsible for the knowledge, which is essential to operating in a functioning society, and for inspiring young minds to fulfill their potential.

Teaching is a challenging yet rewarding profession. Every teacher has the potential to make a monumental difference in the lives of their students every year, whether the student realizes it or not. Each experience in the classroom affects the way that young individuals understand and react to the world around them, and teachers have the power and influence to make that a positive or negative experience. While it may be difficult at times to hold ones self to a high standard for the students, it is essential for shaping their impressionable minds. I believe that the effect that teachers have on their pupils is the most impressive and worthwhile aspect of the teaching profession.

I believe in a humanistic approach to teaching; centered around the student as scholar, this approach is dedicated to the idea that the teacher is the passionate facilitator of knowledge, and are addressing the whole child rather than just focusing on rote academics. This approach is especially crucial with the populace with whom I hope to work with; immigrants and refugees to Rhode Island and the United States.

I believe that this approach, along with appropriate uses of classroom technology, will help individualize the academic experience of students. With control over what and how they learn, students will accept responsibility for their own education. This will instill intrinsic motivation and high rates of academic success within the classroom. Techniques such as reciprocal tutoring and maintaining an engaging classroom environment will help students both academically and socially, which will send them forward into the world with a more well-rounded perspective and the skills necessary to succeed in all realms of life.

My students will collaborate to create a series of consequences if their classroom rules are broken. This form of a Positive Behavioral Intervention System will help the students follow the rules and procedures, because not to do so would break the social contract they made with their peers. At this period of psychological development, the social repercussions will resonate a lot with the students and they will be less prone to breaking their own rules. That said, students displaying any multiple (three or more) offenses or physical acts of violence will be immediately escorted to the office by a member of the administration, at which point parents will be contacted.

For two years I have interned with the Rhode Island Department of Education and with the Rhode Island Commissioner of Higher Education.
