A monsoon is the seasonal changes in the circulation of air in the atmosphere, in addition to the rain associated with the different temperatures of the land and the sea. This includes a wet phase (which is usually what people refer to when they bring up monsoons) and a dry phase.

Monsoons Explained

As mentioned before, monsoons are caused by differences in temperatures between the land and the sea. The main cause of this is that water has a much higher heat capacity (the higher it is, the more difficult it is to change temperature) than land. This means that the temperature on land will fluctuate much more than the ocean during different seasons.

During summer, the land will heat up much faster than the ocean. This means the air above the land will expand and have a lower relative pressure than the area over the water. This will cause the moist air over the ocean to flow to the land. This air will then rise and cool, lowering its ability to carry water, and causing the rain monsoons are associated with.

In the winter, the opposite happens. Since the ocean is warmer, the air over it has a lower pressure, causing air to flow from land to ocean. The air rises and causes rain. On land, this usually means very little rainfall and drought, since all of the rain is happening elsewhere
