The family were taken to an immigration detention centre following the expiration of Priya's bridging visa. Nades' bid for asylum had already been rejected. 

The family has now been in detention for more than 1000 days, and legal processes continue after the High Court last week rejected a bid to hear an appeal on the visa case of younger daughter, Tharnicaa, now four. They are locked up and treated like someone who has committed a crime or even worse.  

Once they have gained refugee status, they are not necessarily ‘released’ from the detention centre to resettle. However, some are permitted to resettle on Christmas Island or Nauru, depending on the location of the detention centre.
