Summary: 
The caste system in India is a system of social hierarchy and discrimination that has been in place for centuries, where the lowest caste, known as untouchables, were relegated to the most distasteful tasks and sort of treated as peasants. The Indian government created "reservations" for the "scheduled castes" as a way to make reparations and create a fair, level playing field for all of its citizens, but deep prejudice against untouchables remains part of the nation's people and culture.
