With the German Immigrants came a lot of culture we now use today, from Hamburgers to our modern idea of Christmas. There were many foods, such as hamburgers, sauerkraut (Debated to be Polish), Frankfurter (To be modern day hot-dog), special kinds of beer, and bratwurst (also a close relative to the hot-dog). Some traditions have been brought as well, such as our modern idea of Christmas. Such as the Christmas Star- Kris Kringle. Though these are great things that have been brought over, during WWI mass hysteria struck, bringing hatred to the German people. The Americans began to name German things such as the Dachshund were renamed to Liberty Hounds and so on with other items. These names have come to fade away with time after that hysteria.

There were many factors that drove Germans from their homeland and to America. To the rest of the world at that time, America was a place of new beginnings, a place where everyone had a voice in what went on, and people could start fresh. That's the mentality many immigrants had when coming to America, whether German or not. Germany however has a history of unfair rulers, often times to escape the persecution of the ruler at the time, they fled to anywhere they could. Many of them choosing America, a place where they for sure would have a voice in government. Though some Americans didn't appreciate the amount of voice they were given, they had it regardless.

Oppression

Though many Germans came from Germany to no-longer be put under oppression, some got quite the opposite. There were times in America's history that nearly everyone disliked the German people. Such times being, during WWI and WWII. During these times the Americans had a hatred towards the German people. Doing such things as renaming things/items they brought over (See Modern day Cultures) and even at one point lynching a German American during an angry mob. Though the people of America hated the Germans during WWII, the American army was highly composed of German American people. Some German people were fed up with the hatred toward them and created a group call "The Bund" it was a Pro-Nazi group who's main goal was to attack those who sent hate towards the Germans. But soon after World War II any harsh mentality soon faded away and everything went back to normal life.
