At a glance no can really know what true good or evils is aside from the laws and moral concepts taught to us. For me I'd say despite the law or moral concepts, one must do what they feel is right, right in way that they help others. Help others in the way that no one else will be hurt or brought down on the process of helping. one must be kind to one's self and to others, i think that is what is good.

Good can be distinguished from evil by belief. I’ve come to realize that good and evil is a complex idea that controls how we act; and it controls how we act because we believe in it. As Catholics, we believe in God and His teachings. As humans, we believe in the natural law. As citizens of a country, we believe in the Constitution. We believe in their contents because we’ve experienced the good and bad things they talked about and witnessed the results. An action that results to hurting someone is bad and an action resulting to helping someone is good. Experiencing those is enough proof of what the Bible, natural law, Constitution, and etc. say which led us to believe in them. Fortunately, a large percentage of our world believe in the same things we do which is why there are established good and evil actions. But as you’d see, there are still people who do “bad” things because they probably don’t believe that what they’re doing is bad — they have different beliefs. In short and in I guess a Theological manner, we are able to distinguish good from evil because the two greatest commandments given to us was love God and love your neighbor; and we believe in this; therefore actions that don’t align with these commandments are bad and actions that do are what is good. Like the trolley, there’s no right thing to do because both choices will result to hurting someone. Doing either of the choices will be distinguished bad because deciding to end someone’s life doesn’t align to the teachings of God, it doesn’t align to teachings that we believe. When asked what to do in that situation, I'd also say that it is too theoretical and refuse to choose because I still am unable to comprehend its circumstances and align it to my beliefs. (Orcajo, Andreu)

In this day and age, distinguishing good from evil can be quite hard. Humans, for example. are complex beings that you can't inherently say that they are good or evil. Nonetheless, good can mean that the actions made were based on compassion, and empathy. The morals that they uphold are for the betterment of everybody - no matter if they are a different race, gender, and nationality. While evil may mean lacking of empathy and compassion which leads to inconsiderate actions made towards others. In short, Good and evil can be distinguished from one another through empathy as this shows the connectedness of a person to other people. Being able to empathize with others can lead to them having a better understanding with one another and taking the right decision wherein both parties are satisfied.

(Lozada, Krynica Rhyss G.)

In life we have to contend with the fact that we are in a flawed place. Is it good to do something that will benefit everyone if it meant one person would suffer. Is it good for everyone to suffer if it meant one person doesn’t. I remember how Abraham asked God if he would destroy Sodom and gomora if it meant one innocent person would die and God said he wouldn’t. Though difficult distinguishing good and evil is difficult I think one way of doing it is by making sure that we make sure that our actions will not affect or make the most minimal damage to any person. Evil on the other hand is actions where a person will disregard the well being of others for ones benefit.

We humans have the capacity to think and make decisions as well as making comparisons. According to Aristotle, he mentioned, "The highest form of existence is the life of the rational being” meaning— humans are the highest form of animal that we are capable of doing things rationally. Distinguishing what is good and evil has a lot of answers but from my perspective, through experience and teachings, depending on the action of an individual will tell or result to what he does is really good or evil. Morals are behavioral standards or ethics that we can determine on what is right and wrong. A person could have different morals but for me, in a sensible manner, doing what is right that benefits the good principles is obviously good while on the other hand, doing unethical ways that could lead you to the wrong path, could result to evil in later parts.

- Ordoñez, Carlos Konrad T.
ME 1-26
THY1

Distinguishing Good from Evil

good and evil tends to differentiate between people because not all of us have the same moral compass as each other, there are many factors for a man to consider what he is doing is actually good, because when we were born we didn't initially know how to differentiate what is good from evil, when we were young we didn't know that our action leads to an outcome, that is where the role of the parents come from because they are the early teachers that would teach us what are right things to do and that would be the setting stones for the moral compass of a person, some would say what they are doing is good but for others it's considered as something evil, to determine what is good from evil you fist have to know the context of its situation. for me, I consider myself to have good knowledge in what's good from evil, to distinguish good from evil I tend to look at what the outcome may be with the decision that I have chosen because for me the end does justify the means.

Good and Evil are judgment based as it differs from each person. It is a very abstract concept especially to us humans who are complex and have different perspectives from each other. The perspective we all know is that good is something that benefits mankind and evil is something that is viewed as immoral and bad. There may be standards in considering something as good and evil, however these standards are not fixed. It varies in circumstances for each person. It could also depend on the context and results. For example, a father steals money from someone to be able to feed his family. His actions can be deemed as evil but his objective is for his family to survive. Also, something that is good for someone may be viewed as evil for another. When a soldier fights for their country, they might kill people during the war. The soldier will be hailed as a hero in their country, but the family of the people they killed will view them as murderers. Good and evil is a moral evaluation and it differs from each person’s perception and action. What we consider as good or evil is determined based on our own standards, using our environment and what others have said/done as reference. It will be indicated as good or evil based on the perception, situation, result, act, religion, and culture.

As for the question, What must I do, My answer for it is to create another option. If time allows it, I would find a way to stop the trolley. It is my way to save 6 people’s lives rather than making a person suffer. Although, for safety, I would pull the lever so that it would go to the track where only one person is in. It is because when there’s no way to stop the trolley, there would only be 1 casualty.

THY1 ME 1-26

All persons have their own right of way of thinking that’s why it’s hard to categorize what is right what is wrong. We can categorize good deeds by respecting other peoples and many things that the bible says. All persons have their own perspectives of what is right and that is what we need to follow because we have the rights to follow what our decisions and perspectives. You can distinguish evil by beliefs and a lot of options this are the things that can destroy your life and emotions. In this world we have laws that we need to follow and we think that is right but some laws have flaws like considering killing peoples and many other else and also the one who leads have flaws that’s why it is hard to determine evil but we can have the option that all persons have the rights to have their own rights. Every person must follow their hearts what is right and what is good and the most important thing is to use your own belief and your common sense to categorize the evil.

If the people are getting hurt, unhappy, and angry about an action done or a word said, then it is evil. But not everything that felt bad is evil, some help one to be better. Anything that is false is evil. On the other hand, if it helps the people around it, it is good. Any words or actions done that helps people are good. But if anything good is made by one that is against their will, then it is evil.

Good or evil is simply a moral judgement/evaluation which is dependent on each individual’s beliefs. Diversity among everyone’s beliefs exist because each of us grew up from a different learning environment. Our perception and standards on moral and immoral acts is greatly influenced by the people within the environment closest to us, especially when we are young. As we grow up, our personal learnings and experiences will then be the most crucial aspect that influences our own beliefs. That is why distinguishing between good or evil can sometimes be a complex matter; as what can be considered good or evil is not absolute for all. One example is when there is a war between two groups. Each group believes that they are fighting for the Good against the evil who did them wrong. Another example is about death penalty. Other people believe that death penalty is “just” and do not consider it as evil, as there are criminals who have committed the gravest crime. They believe that those criminals deserve legal death by the hands of the law as a retribution for their crimes. However, as one of the Christians who follow and share the will of Jesus, we learned and we knew what God has done and commanded us. In the Bible, God calls us to love and forgive our neighbors unconditionally as God did. That is why for Christians, we do not agree with death penalty because our beliefs tells us that it is immoral. Moreover, we Christians base our moral judgement on the word of God. That means we distinguish the good from evil using our learnings, personal experiences, and perspectives in accordance with the word of God and the teachings of the church.

To answer the trolley car riddle, the first thing I am going to do is I would try to do anything in order to stop the train. If the only option left is to choose between the lives of five people and a single one, I would choose to save five of them. Even if those five people are strangers and the one I did not choose to save is someone very dear to me, I would not regret my decision. It is because, from my perspective, five people weigh more than a single one. No matter the age and identity of those five.

(Alcantara, Sylvester)

To answer the question of how you can distinguish good from evil, it is simply based on the commandments of the Lord. For those who obey His will, keeps His commandments, and live christlike will surely be in the presence of Good. Evil however, can be distinguished if a person decides to do immoral and/or wicked acts. A person will fall into the path of evil if he/she stirs away from the Lord as the "enemy" will try to take them from Him. If you do not obey the Lord, keep his commandments, have faith in his will you will surely become a victime of the evil one. As for the trolly, both options presented results in death, If I was ever put in that situation I would try to find another way to save the 6 people, but from a logical perspective a person might say that he/she would choose to save the 5 people instead of 1 since it would be the logical thing to do. For me, good has many kinds of ways to be done by the forms of an act of kindness and simply implying the beliefs of God, for example, the commandments that God gave to us. This commandment is for us to obey what is good for us, however, evil has a lot of ways to be done too, in the form of temptations, discrimination, and a lot more to fill our hearts with anger and hatred towards each other.

Good and Evil are challenging to distinguish; specific actions can go from being good to being evil. Deciding whether something is good or evil is a matter of perspective. It depends on how a particular person perceives good from evil. I believe it's because we all have different experiences, families, friends, morals, and beliefs. Beliefs and morals especially shape our perspectives that eventually affect our ideas, and I believe that our beliefs determine how we perceive Good and Evil. As a Catholic, a believer of God, I perceive evil according to what God says is evil. God's words are how I determine who I hang around with and how I decide my course of action. Choosing what God says is right and staying away from what God says is wrong is how I tell the difference between Good and Evil. The teachings of the catholic church are what have shaped my morals and beliefs throughout my life. The majority of the human population usually has the same perspective regarding good and evil. That's why we have laws; these laws are made to get rid of evil deeds and even promote people's interests. Though we have these laws and the majority of the world population agrees on what is right or wrong, we still have committed evil deeds. This ties into the perspective and beliefs of the people. Those people that commit evil actions are people that have different opinions from most people. Good and evil have no correct answer; that's why it's an exciting topic to discuss. Using the trolley riddle as an example, this ties in perfectly to the subject in the sense that there is no right option. Both options cause a loss of life, and you can argue that both possibilities are evil. Personally, it's the same for good and evil; you can make the statement something is evil or good. I can give an example of Hitler; he killed millions of people just because they were Jews. Mostly everyone will say that is evil, but Hitler and his followers believed what they were doing was good. No matter how evil you may think something is, someone out there will perceive it as good.
(Cortez, Miles)

GOOD AND EVIL

Good and evil can be distinguished depending on someone's belief. Others define it by social standards such as norms, laws, statutes, etc., while others define it based on moral and their religion. But my concept of good and evil is distinguished on both the social and religious standard. I reflect on how these two different standards see and analyze things, and from that, i can assess what is good and evil. For the social standards, for instance, I consider a thing is good if it conforms to the norms or the conventions, as long as it does not compromise something or someone. However, at some point, it is contradicted by the religious standards as many of today's social standards are devious with what the religious texts say. That is why my concept of good and evil is based on the assessment of both the religious and social standards.

- Rodriguez, Croshere Dylan Hart L. (ME 1-26)

The definition of good and evil vary with different people because each person has a different belief. One "good" thing for one person can be "evil" for another person. The general consensus is that if it follows the Commandments of the Lord and follows what the bible says, then it is considered good while disobeying these is considered evil. For me, Good is doing something that impacts the lives of others in a positive way with the different deeds that we do. This may be in the form of helping them physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, etc. Evil meanwhile is doing a deed that leaves a bad taste in their mouth, something that is frowned upon and not an ideal deed to do. Ultimately, the definition of good and evil vary for every individual.

- Lobo, Benedict Gavrie F

But being as broad as possible, being good is being able to empathize with others, to be selfless and compassionate to others regardless of beliefs and ideology. Being evil is the inability to empathize with other. being selfish and being unable to see others without prejudice.

In today's generation distinguishing good from evil is quite confusing and difficult since man is considered as the highest in the hierarchy of beings which make every single one of us superior to the point that it gives every human the capability to think wherein each one of us have different perspective, opinion and beliefs in life. Good and evil is a very broad topic in which before judging one's act we should consider different factors that can affect our decision such as the religious, ethics, philosophical and psychological view that can surely help us figure out whether an act committed is good or evil.

Personally, I believe that good and evil are opinionated or judgement based since it is possible that we believe what we did is good but for some it might be evil; there are two types of standards- (Philosophical and Biblical) created so that we will have a basis on what to believe on. In the Philosophical view, our government created rules and laws that gives us knowledge on what is good or bad and what is right and wrong, and on the other hand, the Biblical view has the bible and ten commandments that asserts moral principles for us to follow. In my opinion as a catholic and loyal follower of God I believe more in the biblical side since it is more clear and understandable and it's what my heart, mind and soul wants to follow.

To answer the trolley car problem, the first thing I would do is to find another way out to the point that I'll do anything what it takes just to save them so that both parties would be safe and sound. But if time didn't cooperate with my plan and the only option left is to choose between saving the lives of five people or the solo one, I would not pull the lever even though it is hard for me since it is very unethical for me to choose who will live and who will die, there is a reason why the train is running on the side of the five individuals. I Don't have the right to alter on what will happen in the future because I believe that everything is already planned wherein there is a purpose why it happens.

Jazmin, Austin James S.
ME 1-26
THY1

Right and wrong in life are not as easily distinguishable as telling black from white. Most of the time, good and evil is subjective and usually depends on one’s belief. Being morally correct usually stands in the gray area. For me personally, from what I generally perceive as a Christian and as a citizen I need to abide by the laws of the bible and/or the constitution. But as a human being I must abide by my beliefs and perceptions and at the most basic; that is to help those that I can help and not harm those that should not be harmed. In the trolley problem, there is obviously not a morally correct answer at least for me personally because it stands against what I believe. Arriving at this moral dilemma, I will choose to save the five rather than the other one because my logic tells me that the needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few. At the end, my choice was just purely based on what I think should be, and it is no longer rooted on my biblical or constitutional beliefs. Good and evil is just a matter of perception that grew through the different experiences that we had as a human being.

-Bicera, Brian Joseph F.
  ME 1-26

What must I do? Since the only choice I have is to flick the switch in order to save five people or the single person on the other track, I will base my decision on what will be morally correct. Making the right decision is extremely difficult because I don’t know anything about the six people. However, I think that the best way of saving them is to sacrifice the one person on the sidetrack. I think it’s the best decision for this situation because saving five people is more valuable than saving one life. Sometimes, sacrifices are made in order for the good of many.
How do I distinguish good from evil? Most of the time I think of it as simple as telling the difference between light and darkness. However, in some cases, if I tell a blind person the difference between light and darkness, the blind person won’t be able to answer it. Even though I am able to see what is good and what is bad, I still need some corrective lenses that will help me see what is beneath the surface. The corrective lenses are God’s Words. By following the Word of God, I can use it as my guide to distinguish good from evil. In my opinion, it may be a difficult punishing task to distinguish good from bad or evil. As a kid, I was always taught to be wise in situations like this. Keeping in mind that there are two parties with different perspectives, experiences, and opinions. A thing that may be evil for one may also be acceptable or in this case, good for the other. But if there is no choice left then I will switch the lever to redirect the trolly into the side track sacrificing the life of a single person. Sacrificing a life is never a sound solution but given the situation where both choices will lead to people losing their lives, I will choose the solution with fewer fatalities. Even though the decision will be hard for me I still have to do it since it is the less fatal solution.

Distinguishing good from evil depends on one's beliefs and morals since everyone has their moral code and not everyone has the same moral code. Especially in today's generation, it is more difficult to distinguish good from evil. People nowadays are now more outspoken about any situation. Some may praise it but some may also criticize it and it will lead to a clash of opinions leading to discussions if a certain situation, statement, or event is good or evil. At the end of the day, everyone has the same or different opinions, beliefs, and morals in distinguishing good from evil. But in my own definition, I distinguish good from evil based on experiences in life. With different experiences, we can distinguish good from evil, and with the guidance of God he will lead us to many more encounters that will mold our moral code that will help us to distinguish good from evil.

- Albino, Carlos III C.

The goodness and evilness of a decision is a complex idea in which people are given the freedom on how to view it depending on their beliefs and judgment. The different views of each society are significant as one action may be highly viewed as cruel when the reason behind might have a greater purpose. However, distinguishing good from evil is quite challenging sometimes as we engage in a society wherein we also find pleasure in doing something bad. Like when a serial killer takes lives.

Good and evil are based on our judgment and I believe that they are complementary like the two sides of a coin — one cannot exist without the other. Most of us believe in the same things we do and therefore, there are established good and bad actions. However, some people do bad things because they don’t believe that they are bad. It's a fact of life that individuals behave in search of their happiness. Yet some activities have repercussions. The repercussions of activity determine whether an action is good or harmful.

Good and Evil cannot be easily distinguished by only considering how a certain action affects someone/ something since perspective differs from each person. Every individual grew up with different viewpoints, opinions, and morals which considerably affect how they view certain actions.

For example, abortion is not allowed in the Catholic Church because they see it as a form of murder involving a human being. This act can be easily seen as evil if someone does not consider underlying reasons why the mother would like to have an abortion. A catholic might say abortion must not be an option but if he/she realizes the mother was underage and impregnated against her will, he/she might have second thoughts since the mother lacks the ability to take care of a child and/or is at risk of death during labor. This is one of the many situations wherein good and evil cannot be easily determined.

Though I might not be able to distinguish good from evil, I would prefer to choose an action which at least is considered morally right by the catholic church.

- Reyes, Seth Qourban I., ME 1-26
