Introduction

I lose my patience with music that isn’t associated with my culture milieu generally. However, culture is subject to change and the type of music that existed for the young black American in the 90’s has little resemblance to what modern hip-hop is today (or at least sounds different). However, I took another step forward and went beyond the conglomeration of American cultures and viewed foreign cultural music from the Mid-Eastern World genre. In my padlet, I will be defining culture, why music is an influential factor of culture and how it effects society generally, and how elements of music from different cultures could impact my perception of music. In addition, I will assess the song I selected for media report #2 and incorporate the cultural influences this song helps facilitate in the Middle East and juxtapose it with Western music. Ultimately, this may unveil a function between our lives and lives we consider foreign, in which we may find are not as drastically different as we believe them to be.

"Basically what westerners need to take from eastern philosophy is the necessity of embracing contradiction"
- Reddit User, MUnderwoodBarcode, November 5th, 2017

Discussion:
Western music is, in a sense, egotistical. As if, since it is run under our society, it fits a definition of unique, stylish, risky, and encompassing. However, after listening to 5 or 6 U.S. Pop or Hip-Hop songs in a row, they begin to sound very similar. Though for some reason we believe that it is beyond mainstream even while it still fits the label of a genre. In the same sense do we consider foreign music and "sell out" musicians. Can musical art be appreciated if it is not considered an art form? This is a strong form of opinion and leans towards two extremes that raise social tension around the globe in multiple aspects.

There is ambiguity in life, in how we live, and in the decisions we make. We are masked with our own culture and a loss of that mask represents a loss of our identity. Truly, how would we define a characteristic that is entirely unique? In life, we naturally fill in the roles of our culture to address and meet reality on terms everyone comprehends. When does it become safe to remove this mask?

Below is an example of a World Genre song. However, the original song I used for the media report was removed due to unknown causes. This song would be described as, from a westerner's perspective, as having western influences. However, it represents a more traditional and common trope many songs use modernly. Instead, it's culture is only detectable through the vocals and string family of instruments.
