Stanza 1

· Looking at each other “face to face” implies eye contact. Eye contact is what allows us to see into the soul of the person.

Stanza 2

· Waves and the ocean are, like a relationship, terrifying and mysterious, as well as exciting.

Stanza 3

· Stones show the stubbornness that can happen between two people.

Stanza 4

· A tree needs its roots to stay upright and living, much like how relationships needs security and support to stay healthy.

Stanza 5

· Knives leave scars on the skin in the same way toxic relationships leave emotional scars on a person.

· A spark creates a fire that can relate to passion, or it can relate to destruction.

Stanza 6

· Falling stars are a crumbling relationship leaving only the darkness and hopelessness inside a person after a break-up.

The third stanza resonates with me due to a deep friendship that I held, where both of us cared for each other and held together like the roots of a tree, but then one of us started to suck out the energy of the other. The roots that kept the tree on the ground started to poison themselves. Eventually, it came to a point at which (to stay with the metaphor) we had to uproot the friendship to ensure that we could carry on with our lives.

I held you close to my heart as one of the best people I knew. However, over time, you started to take this friendship for granted. You excluded me from your life, not in an ¨trying to keep some privacy¨ way, but by explicitly avoiding communication with me. I still care for you, but I'm not going to sacrifice my health to keep you close. Whenever you want to reconnect and go back to how we used to be, I will gladly listen, but I'm not sure if we'll be able to.

- Angélica
