The goal of this PSA is to encourage dad's to spend quality time with their children. It emphasizes how children need this kind of quality time with their fathers.

This is my favorite PSA from the 1980's (when we apparently hadn't yet quite figured out how nutrition works.) In this PSA (local to MA & RI) a weird man-lion encourages kids to eat spaghetti and pizza rather than gum and candy. The goal of the ad was to encourage kids to support the school lunch program. To this day, I wonder how much obesity in the U.S. (and how much of my love for frozen chicken patties) is due to the crappy foods we were encouraged to eat at school as kids.

The image is clearly an over exaggeration of what would come from sneezing but its comedic route puts an emphasis on how it can affect the people around you.

This public service announcement is based on the theme of school safety and targeted at children in schools, using a turtle character to help children remember what to do. The PSA warns children about the dangers of atomic bombs and teaches them how to defend themselves in case of nuclear attack. This drill first began as a preparedness measure after the Soviet Union had detonated its first nuclear weapon in the 1950s thereby teaching correct children precautionary measures to follow once the drills were administered in schools.

Below are PSA from Creative Hall Famer Tom Mcelligott. Tom Mcelligott created thousands of advertisements using humor and sarcasm to get his clients messages across. The PSA’s from the late 80’s focus around the Catholic Church and how commercialization has taken over the values and goals of the religion. It’s also targeting “stale Catholics” those who are apart of a church but don’t practice their beliefs like reading the Bible or attending mass. Instead much of America uses Catholic holidays as a way to make money, or new traditions that draw your attention away from the true purpose for celebration.

McGruff encouraged Americans to lock their doors and to persuade children to not get into cars with strangers. I think the target audience started out to be most of the American population but over the years the National Crime Prevention Council realized it should be tailored more to children that could relate more to an animated dog. As today its targets children more to be careful about the choices they make when out in public.

The goal, when McGruff the Crime Dog started growling in 1979, was to encourage Americans lock their doors and persuade children to refrain from getting into cars with strangers. This PSA created by the National Crime Prevention Council wanted the public to be vigilant and help authorities fight crime or stop it before it even happens. By informing children of stranger danger, and encouraging adults to lock their houses to keep their valuables and themselves safe. Today McGruff has been tailored more towards children as they grviatet towards a animated dog better than adults. As well since we are living in a technology age McGruff has gone digital and tries to encourage young adults not to cyberbully and be on the look out for these types of crimes. So McGruff has been able to adapt to the times but still be able to keep the same message of trying to fight crime.

The goal of this video is to show men during the 1950s that there is nothing wrong with working with women and that usually the problem working with women stems from yourself. The PSA was made by McGraw Hill with a persuasive goal as to change the minds of men to have them work better and with women in the workplace. This was a PSA around seventy years ago because back then women did not work in the workplace. They were trying to get men to not be so problematic with the idea of women working along side them.

This public service announcement is from the 1980s with the message being simple, don't do crack. This video utilizes one of the stranges TV personalities of the 80s, Pee Wee Herman to relay the message to children that they should not do crack cocaine. The target audience for this specific PSA is towards the age range of children to early teens. The reason being is that Pee Wee Herman is a star on a hit TV show during the 80s called The Pee Wee Herman Show which is a children's show. Therefore, this demographic will listen to Pee Wee Herman telling them to lay off the crack because they watch and relate (kind of) to a character like his.

There was a large drug problem in America in the 1980s, so this ad is an attempt by the regional poison control center to educate Long Island families on the dangers of leaving pills within the reach of children.

This public service announcement is one of many that took place at the end of every episode of the G.I Joe: A real American hero tv show in the 1980s. These public service announcements were played during the last 30 seconds of each episode of the TV show. Each individual PSA has a different message that was targeted mainly towards younger individuals that would watch the cartoon animated series. The particular PSA I chose for this assignment talks about the importance of not giving strangers your home address to teach younger children that this is not safe because there are cruel people out there in the world that want to cause trouble.

Through this PSA, we see what this type of drug abuse can do to someone, and how it effects their family. The target audience for this video is primarily younger people, who might think they want to try this type of drug, especially those that live in the state Montana. The era that this was made was the late 2000's, when the use and popularity of Methamphetamines' was on the rise, especially in youth. The overall theme of the PSA is how drug abuse can destroy your life and your families lives, as well.

This PSA was from 1971. It was a commercial about a green sticker that parents could buy to put on hazardous items in the house or things you did not want your kids getting into. Items like cleaning products, medicine or “things that will make you sick”. Dr. Richard Moriarty, a pediatrician and clinical professor of pediatrics came up with the idea. There was a catchy jingle/song that went along with it and a name. “Mr. Yuk” was the green sticker making a face that would scare the kids away or make sure if they saw it they would know not to touch it. The target audience would be both parents and children. Parents because they would be the ones buying the stickers but the children would have to be aware of what the sticker means. Since it was a “scary” face, the goal was to scare off the kids from the products.

This PSA was released in 1940 in collaboration with the U.S. Justice Department. When I originally saw the title I thought the U.S. was calling actual aliens to register. The theme of the ad is joyful, relaxed, and patriotic. It starts with two unregistered immigrants walking to the post office to register for citizenship saying "America has admitted you with open arms, you owe it to America to register now." The target audience for the ad is undocumented immigrants with the hope of persuading them to register. What made this PSA interesting is how so much has changed in 80 years from PSAs encouraging aliens to casually register at the post office to political ads against undocumented immigrants and a country torn with what to do next.

This 1991 PSA is an addition to the Mars Blackmon and Michael Jordan commercials chronicle. It comes from the minds of director Spike Lee, Michael Jordan, and Nike Inc. The target audience for this commercial is kids, a demographic that idolizes Michael Jordan and his sneakers, and is filmed in a classroom. Although the end goal of this ad was to sell shoes, its central theme was to prevent kids from dropping out of school.

"How To Be Pretty - 1940s Guide for High School Girls" Brianna Deenihan

The theme of this 1940s PSA is a young woman's looks. This PSA is a how-to guide with specific steps for what Mary Stuyvesant thinks makes a pretty girl. The goal of this PSA was to inform the target audience (high school female students) of the specific steps that lead to beauty, but not the ones they would think. She explains that beauty starts with a balanced diet, a healthy sleep, and plenty of sleep. It is interesting because there was a lot of sexism back in these times, where women were expected to look pretty while they cooked and cleaned, but this woman focused on the fact that if girls put more effort into their health and things inside their body, it will help them feel better about themselves/

1950's Anti-Homosexual PSA - Boys Beware

Tolu Ademola
This PSA from the title is about Anti-homosexual sentiments. It is about being aware of people with the sickness of the "mind" which is homosexuality. It's just surprising how far we've come from these type things. And it's interesting how they make homosexuals into predators, especially with the use of a young boy with a grown man. It clearly makes it seem like homosexuals like to prey on young boys and not someone their age. This is PSA depicts homosexual as petifile. And now thinking to how some people migh depict homosexuality it's not so different but also very different.

1990 Anti Drug PSA - Father at Son's Grave

Julie Caserta
This PSA is from 1990 and it essentially depicts a father at his 13 year old son's grave having a "conversation" with him about drugs, a conversation he had hoped to have with him alive and possibly not at that young of an age. It is truly sad seeing how much of an influence drugs have on the youth. The overarhcing theme of this PSA is about drug use and its unavoidable consequences. The persuasive goal is to promote awareness about how harmful and deadly drugs can be and show the youth that this is something they shouldn't engage with. The target audience for this particular PSA is children and teenagers, even though drugs can effect those of any age, this commercial was made for the youth.
