Problems in the Western music canon are problems to us nowadays, but back then were normal and no one thought of them as "problems. For example the issues with gender are huge from the fact that this canon has almost no female composers. When one thinks of this canon, we all think of the male composers from that time. We also hear of all the issues with race back then and how it was mostly if not all white men that were the "geniuses" of that canon. We also see that there are only older gentlemen and not any adolescents or younger adults. Nowadays there are so many young people that are the "geniuses" of today's canon and somewhere the roles sort of switched from the older to the younger. It was fun to listen to some of the music that women made when they were sort of taking their own stand like Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" and Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" which I listened to in the reading and really enjoyed. I found it interesting looking back into history and seeing what it was like back then and what were the "norms" were. I am very happy that things have made a dramatic change since then.

I really liked this quote and agree with it. I think it does start in the classroom to combine all kinds of music by all kinds of people.

I referenced this quote because it shows us that back in those times it was sadly more about who wrote the music rather than the music itself

When looking at some of the symphonies, I did see a lot of traditional canon music. I didn't think I would see much different than that, but it still surprised me that there wasn't a lot outside of the lines of this classical canon. I personally did not see myself in this music just because this genre of music does not speak to me that much. I do enjoy listening to it every now and again, but it isn't my favorite therefore I didn't really see myself when listening to the work or seeing the performances.
