In 2nd grade, we plan to introduce our students to the tools of using academic and dialogic questions in the classroom by first explaining and modeling the purpose of each type. We will work to engage students in dialogue that focuses on how each question type supports their learning. As a visual aid, we plan to provide each student with a copy of the question frames as well as use a copy in a small group setting to practice these questioning techniques with the students. We will incorporate this into our weekly routine to ensure we are creating purposeful and intentional time for students to practice this principle. We plan to post a larger version of the question frames visible for all students to see to reinforce the question frames and encourage student use.

Then, we plan on laminating a copy and having a large display for the board as well as individual copies at their desk and at our small group stations. Last, we plan to further refer to these Academic Questions when introducing this framework into Mini Lessons. We look forward to implementing this in all of our subject areas.

We will begin with students understanding what a question is and how it helps us learn and clarify information. Students will engage in discussions, read picture books that model curiosity, and participate in a fun "question game" to reinforce the concept. Next, they will discover that asking questions is a powerful tool for growth. To support this idea, the class will create an anchor chart highlighting different types of questions and why they should be celebrated.

Students will be introduced to academic questioning through modeling. We will demonstrate how asking thoughtful questions enhances learning across subjects, using think-aloud strategies and real examples. During whole group and small group discussions, students will be encouraged to ask their own academic questions, with guidance provided through structured practice.

To support independent questioning, the class will reference the chart we created with question starters and sentence stems, allowing students to develop their questioning skills confidently.

Diana Rush

I will begin to model student questions in the music classroom to guide the students and encourage more creativity when creating compositions. I want to encourage the students to explore ideas rather than seeking a single correct answer. I will list some examples below.

-How can I organize my composition? (musical form AB, ABA)

-What happens if I change the tempo?

-Can I simplify or enhance a section to make it stronger?

-How does adding dynamics or articulation affect the piece?

-What instrument would sound best for my musical idea?

-How can I use rhythm to create contrast?

-What mood or emotion do I want my composition to express?

By integrating these types of questions, I hope to create a learning environment where students actively engage in the composition process, think critically, and develop their musical voice.

In the kindergarten classroom, we will implement hand signals to support students in self-monitoring their comprehension of instructions. After instructions have been given and modeled, but before transitioning to independent work, students will use a hand signal to assess their understanding. A thumbs-up indicates that students fully understand the instructions and task, and feel prepared to begin. A sideways thumb signifies that students mostly understand the instructions but require clarification before proceeding. A thumbs-down indicates that students need the directions to be repeated or rephrased for better comprehension. For students using the sideways thumb or thumbs-down signals, we will provide anchor charts with sentence stems to assist them in formulating academic questions. This self-monitoring strategy will encourage young students to take responsibility for their learning and empower them to self-advocate by learning how to ask for help.
