It was just him and his brother since his parents died. Eventually, Ponyboy goes to the movie where he meets Cherry. Cherry end up needed to leave because her boyfriend shows up. Johnny and Ponyboy end up falling asleep past curfew. Ponyboy gets yelled at when he gets home so he runs away with Ponyboy. They get stopped by Cherry’s boyfriend and friends which results in Johnny killing one of them. 
Then Ponyboy and Johnny run away for a while but then a cigarette causes the church there in the light on fire. When they go back in the church to save people Johnny get extremely hurt. While Ponyboy and Dally are just injured. There was a big war between the greasers and the Socs do when Ponyboy gets back there's a rumble between them and the greasers win. When they go to tell Johnny he doesn't care and ends up dying. He tells Ponyboy to stay gold while Dally freaks out and leaves. Ponyboy is also messed up from the rumble and suffers a concussion. 
Later they get a call from Dally who had stolen something and was getting chased by the cops. Once the gang catches up with him, he’s in the street light and puts up a gun and a cop shoots him and ends up dying.
