How would you describe the lesson being observed for ths class period?

I arrived to the classroom early to see the end of a lesson, and then stayed for the next period to see the beginning of the same lesson. The students were learning about George Washington Carver, and all the great and scholarly things he did in his lifetime. Students were expected to read and annotate a short article about his life. They began their day by viewing a painting based off of Carver's life, and they had to make inferences about what he contributed to society. They also came up with synonyms for the word 'extraordinary', in which described Mr. Carver. The lesson was mainly based around critical thinking and observing. They had to apply what they knew and observed about George Washington Carver, and create a list of extraordinary things he did with his life, and ordianry things about his life.

What were the Students Doing?

The students were very excited to complete this lesson, because the had previously learned about Carver in other classes. Students were observing, making inferences, predicting, and applying their knowledge of Carver throughout various activities on a worksheet Mr. Brody created. Some students had a hard time focusing on their group work. I floated around the room, and guided any groups that needed help. One group in particular did a fine job on the annotation portion of the lesson. The girls took turns reading, highlighting, and annotating in the margins of the article. They were organized and motivated.

Mr. Brody encouraged me to float around the room to help students as they worked, and he did the same. This was the first time I was asked to help, and it worked out very well. Mr. Brody encouraged students and asked them prompting questions about their annotations and predictions of Carver's life. He did not give away answers. Students seemed to enjoy his guidance, and they responded to him for the most part as far as direction and discipline goes.

Which Model of Instruction does this model most align?

Mr. Brody used cooperative learning throughout most of the lesson. Students were to work with their table group, and then move on to pairing up with a partner for the annotations and listing portion of the lesson. This seems to be one of the most effective types of instruction for Mr. Brody's classroom. He uses this kind of instruction quite frequently, and students respond well to the instruction. His classroom does tend to get a little rowdy and unorganized at times, but he has solid classroom management.
