It appears upper class women of late 18th century England had much freedom in deciding who they should marry, as evidenced by Elizabeth rejecting various men on multiple occasions. Is this a form of conservative, women empowerment? Why?

Austin Martinez - Free Indirect Speech Question

Jane Austen has been credited with pioneering the perspective of "free indirect speech," which allows for a character's thoughts (followed in the third person) to leak into the narration and give the narrator a personality of their own. For example, in the introduction of Darcy, who is Elizabeth's initial suitor and soon to be husband, the narrator reflects Elizabeth's perception of the character by stating he is boastful, elitist, and arrogant. By allowing the characters to influence the narrator's telling of the story, it results in almost creating a entirely new character of its own. What do you think might be the purpose for this literary tool and how does it contribute/influence our perception of the novel's characters?

Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley agree that "A woman must have thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing, and the modern languages."
Many times in literature, a character that seems to be wiser and smarter than the others is often present to act as a vehicle for the author's comments. Mr. Bennet has shown this quality, especially when told to talk to Elizabeth after she rejects Mr. Collins' proposal. He essentially tells her to follow her heart and do as she believes is right instead of conforming to the social expectations and pressures. Can you find any other instances in which Bennet plays the role of the intellectual voice in the book and elaborate on the comment Austen is trying to make through those examples?

Collins is the author's biggest subject of satire. Austen in criticizing the system during her time where only men are allowed to inherit property. Mr. Bennet is forced to give this unworthy man his property because his wife did not give birth to son. Collins is also a higher class by association and believes in class wholeheartedly. Due to these factors he, as the symbol of the system on entailment of property to men, is portrayed as foolish and blind to his own faults.
