This article by Brett Zimmerman touches on how Nathaniel Hawthorne's work uses themes of religion to touch on the refusal of The American Dream as a plausible reality to chase. “That would include an unhealthy religious mindset and, despite her freethinking spirit, Hester is not wholly free from the poisonous worldview of Christianity.” This idea shows Hawthorne's opposition to The American Dream. His writing in the Scarlet Letter is a reflection of this society. He uses the characters in his book “The Scarlet Letter” to display how society can affect one's own free will. The traditionalist teaching of Religions in society causes someone not to have that free will used in teaching presented by The American Dream. Certain things someone will pursue will be shunned in these societies, regardless if they are morally wrong or not. This is presented through the themes of Alienation and Isolation in his writing, even if the character Hester tried, he could not achieve The American Dream.

This article written on Hawthorne's writing, can highlight the use of characters to touch on how one's morality and ideas can go against The American Dream. He uses these negative figures to showcase how the pursuit of external validation will always trump the pursuit of one's own will. This poses the question if there's going to be a pursuit of one's real passion, or what will get them accepted. These characters have freedom but showcase too much cognitive dissonance to be chasing something on their moral compass... Hawthorne uses the government's ideas to create a picture of what they are worried about and how that affects The American Dream. Hawthorne addresses the idea that those might not have equal opportunity to have free will, based off the censorship in the Government. “Still, Hawthorne remained peeved about Field's censorship. "What a terrible thing it is," he grumbled, "to try and let off a little bit of truth into this miserable humbug of a world!", his disgruntled mood shows how his writing does not support The American dream. He poses the question, how would a writer who wants to grow to the top not be able to fully express his ideas? He did not have the freedom of expression, and this was contradictory to American Dream ideals. The contradiction comes to show his writing is not in favor of The American Dream.
