I am all for paying less for a good service. Lowering the fees may increase the union's membership and they might even have a better chance at negotiating because of the high numbers. However, they are sort of forcing you to join their union on the basis of paying less. In this manner, they are infringing our Constitutional right to join any union of our choice. So what they are doing is not actually ethical.

This decision violates the constitutional right to freedom of association as outlined in Section 18 of the South African Constitution, which guarantees individuals the right to join or not join any organization, including unions. Forcing educators to join a union in exchange for lower fees infringes on their freedom of choice and may lead to unfair labour practices. Educators should be free to choose union membership based on their needs, without coercion. Such a move by the union could also contravene the Labour Relations Act (66 of 1995), which protects voluntary union membership.

A larger membership base can strengthen the union bargains power when negotiating with school boards that can lead to better benefits for educators but on the other hand requiring educators to join the union might be seen as infringing on their constitutional right to join any union of their choice. Some educators may prefer not to join a certain union for different reasons.

I don't see a problem with them lowering their membership fees as long as they offer good services. It is an individual's choice and right to join the union regardless of its membership fees. The clause that states all the educators must join this union seems like the educators' right of freedom of association is being violated. This is not a good advertising strategy.

The teacher’s unions proposal to lower union fees for all educators has both pros and cons.

The Pros: Affordability as lower fees will make union membership more accessible. A stronger collective bargaining power due to the unified membership, the union’s ability to negotiate will increase leading to better working conditions for all.

The Cons: The teachers Freedom of Association as highlighted in Section 18 of the Constitution, which protects the right to freedom of association, may be negatively impacted through forcing all teachers to belong to one union. Have a single union can also lead to monopolistic behaviour which might reduce the unions accountability.

Therefore, while lower fees and unity are positive, the proposal risks infringing on constitutional rights to freedom of association and limiting diverse representation for educators.

Increased membership lower fees might encourage more educators to join the union leading to a stronger more unified and voice in negotiations. Another benefit is that it reduces financial relief to teachers, making union membership more accessible especially for those with lower incomes. A large membership base can enhance the unions bargaining power, potentially leading to better working conditons, salaries, and benefits for all teachers.

The following are potential challenges: this will create a type of pressure for educators to join the union which could lead to resentment or a sense coercion.

With a larger and more diverse membership, it might be challenging to address the varied needs and opinion of all members effectively.

the union must ensure that the reduced fees are sustainable in the long term and that they can still provide adequate support and services to thier members.

consideration should be taken that its important that joining the union remains a voluntary choice for educators, ensuring that thier rights to freedom of association are respected.
