"This is America" and "Let America Be America Again" both call out inequalities in society. "This is America" shows violence and brutality in black communities, while "Let America Be America Again" shows how the American dream isn't real for most, and the whole country is unfair. Both pieces are about how life is harder and different for minorities, specifically African Americans. They show the difference between ideals and reality, like the singing and gunfire and then the American dream and the struggle of the poor.

They highlight the issues faced by immigrants and people of color throughout American culture. Childish Gambino sang about the shootings taking place in black neighborhoods. He showed the world that despite getting freedom the gun violence and police brutality did not come to an end. Langston Hughes addressed the american dream and how it is basically unattainable for people of color. He addressed that freedom did not come yet and America is stained with the terrors that occur inside of it.

In "Let America Be America Again" and "This is America", both Langston Hughes and Childish Gambino display the message of America not being the American dream, especially for the minorities. In the beginning of the poem, Hughes provides stanzas that describe the ideal America which is supposed to be "...the dream the dreamers dreamed...that great strong land of love where kings connive nor tyrants scheme that any man be crushed by one above"(Hughes). However after each of those stanzas the poet writes a statement similar to "America never was America to me". Similarly

"This is America" shows the unfiltered reality of the issues in America today, such as gun violence and police brutality, through graphic scenes of gun usage. During the music video, whenever the line "this is America" was sung, the mood and melody of the song drastically changed, which grasped the attention of listeners. This highlights the intentions of the song, which is to reflect on current societal issues and remind the audience of the problem. This echos Hughes' poem as it also advocates for change and former issues that the author feels the need to change. The poem shows how imperfect America is and how it will not guarantee the "American dream".

Hughes writes, “I am the farmer, bondman to the soil. I am the worker sold to the machine. I am the Negro, servant to you all”(Hughes 31-33). Hughes is saying that African Americans were not given the same opportunities as the white man to succeed in America. They work the difficult jobs that don’t pay well white the white man has the real opportunity to make a name for himself. Glover writes in his song, “Police be trippin’ now
Yeah, this is America
Guns in my area”(Glover). The problems that African Americans face in modern times are gun violence and police brutality, and Glover raps about that.
