Understanding specific environments can help you stay safe as you know things like what the weather is like, if there are natural water sources, if there are safe places to camp, etc. It also aids in protecting the environment itself, as people who understand it are more likely to know the significance of animals and plants. Understanding Wilsons Prom allowed me to be mindful when I was hiking about the rules to protect the environment.

Then should look to see if there are any active ski lifts nearby to ask the operator where I am. If there aren't any in sight/nearby I can call ski patrol. Understanding the mountain and knowing landmarks could help avoid this kind of incident as even if you do get separated you are still able to find your way back down to the town center.
