This musical is based around the movie of the same name that was released in 1967. The movie was based on the musical Chrysanthemum which was first shown in London in 1956. It is about a small-town girl called Millie Dillmount arrives in New York City, ready to make her dreams come true, planning to marry for money and not love. Her plan is simple: find a job as a secretary for an eligible bachelor, and then marry him. It doesn’t take long for Millie’s “thoroughly modern” plan to go wrong. Her conniving landlady plots to kidnap Millie’s best friend and sell her into slavery in Hong Kong. Her wealthy boss seems entirely uninterested in her flirtations. Worst of all, the man with whom she falls head over heels in love with doesn’t have a penny to his name.

http://stageagent.com/shows/musical/1458/thoroughly-modern-millie

Pros:

I think this was a good choice for our final project as it covers how women were first allowed to enter the work force after the twenties.

It also includes a strong female lead.

Cons:

Not enough female roles within the production for our cast members.

Too many male parts that we cannot change and not enough males to take on these parts.

Set in 1920s Chicago and based on real-life murders and trials, the musical follows Roxie Hart, a wannabe vaudevillian star who murders her lover and is arrested despite her attempts to convince her pushover husband, Amos, to lie for her. In the Cook County Jail, she meets her hero, the famed double-murderess and nightclub performer Velma Kelly who murdered both her husband and her sister when she found them in bed together. When both acquire the same lawyer, the greedy and lustful superstar, Billy Flynn, tensions come to a head as they both crave the spotlight though instead of onstage, they’re after the flashbulb of the newspaper reporters.

http://stageagent.com/shows/musical/1091/chicago

Pros:

Trains the group into working with jazz dance as the movements are more defined with Fosse style.

Need to use more devised pieces as we have to cut out a lot from the script.

Cons:

Not enough parts for our group.

As it was coming back to broadway, if we were to do this we would have had to cut a lot of things out of the script, not being able to have a full show.

Based on the 1980 movie of the same name and music and lyrics written by Dolly Parton. It is set in the late 1970s. Violet has worked at Consolidated for many years but has never been given the chance to rise above senior supervisor status, although she is capable of much more. Judy is newly separated and joins the company having never worked before. Doralee is a sexy, happily married country girl, but she is ostracized from the other female workers. After Judy has an awful first day, Hart passes Violet over for another promotion, and Doralee finds out that Hart has been telling everyone they are having an affair, the three women unite in their hatred of Hart, concocting a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, they live out their wildest fantasy of giving their boss the boot, kidnapping him and suspending him in his house. Over a joint, they fantasize about how they would kill him. When Violet almost unwittingly poisons Hart the next day, he blackmails the three women, threatening them with the police. Doralee ties Hart up with the phone wires and, feeling empowered, they decide to imprison him in his own house while his wife is away. While Hart remains "otherwise engaged," Violet, Judy, and Doralee run the office to great effect. The women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down causing it to flourish and raise productivity. Whilst Hart is tied up, the women use the time to gather evidence that Hart has been embezzling from the company, but Hart breaks free and surprises the women at the office. However, his attempts to reveal the truth about his kidnapping are foiled when the Chairman of the Board arrives to praise the company’s increased productivity. The Chairman sends Hart to head up the Bolivia office and promotes Violet to the first female CEO which is an extremely huge deal for those times. With Hart gone, the company reprise 9 to 5, in the happy knowledge that times have changed for the better.

http://stageagent.com/shows/musical/6113/9-to-5

Pros:

Mostly female cast.

Empowering story line.

Comedic elements which tie the musical together to also convey a positive message about female empowerment within the workplace.

Enough males to fill parts.

Good opportunities for multi-roling.

Almost everyone has a speaking part at some point.

We could change some male characters to be female.

Cons:

There are only 4 main roles so It doesn’t give everyone a huge chance.

On August 26th, in 1970, 50,000 feminists in America marched for women's rights and equality only 50 years after women won the right to vote. "Officially sponsored by the National Organization for Women (NOW), the Women’s Strike for Equality March was the brainchild of Betty Friedan, who wanted an “action” that would show the American media the scope and power of second-wave feminism".
The original idea Betty Friedan had was to a nationwide work stoppage, where women would cease cooking and cleaning in order to draw attention to the unequal distribution of domestic labour between men and women, an issue that she mentioned in her 1963 bestselling book, The Feminine Mystique. No one is sure on how many women went on strike that day, but the march served as a powerful symbolic gesture with participants holding signs with slogans like “Don’t Iron While the Strike is Hot” and “Don’t Cook Dinner – Starve a Rat Today.”
The event was said to be one of the biggest protests for women's equality since the suffrage and marches for the women's vote and had hope that it would instigate changes for the future generations of women.

http://time.com/4008060/women-strike-equality-1970/
https://tavaana.org/en/content/1960s-70s-american-feminist-movement-breaking-down-barriers-women

1970 was the year that the Equal Pay Act was passed even though the Act did not come into force until 1975. This prohibited unequal pay and working conditions between men and women in the workplace. Its foundations were laid down by women’s industrial action at the Ford car-manufacturing plants in 1968. The 1970s and ‘80s saw more and more industrial action by women and men as workers fought for their rights regardless of their gender, ethnicity or class.

https://www.bl.uk/sisterhood/articles/equal-pay-and-equality-legislation

Due to the large number of American women taking jobs in the war industries during the second World War, the National War Labor Board persuaded employers in 1942 to voluntarily make "adjustments which equalise wage or salary rates paid to females with the rates paid to males for comparable quality and quantity of work on the same or similar operations."

Most employers failed to heed this "voluntary" request, but at the end of the war, most women were laid off from their new jobs to make room for the returning veterans.

Until the early 1960s, newspapers published separate job listings for men and women and almost all jobs were categorised according to sex, with the higher level jobs listed only under "Help Wanted-Male." In some cases the advertisements ran identical jobs under male and female listings but with separate pay scales for the employees. Separate meant unequal. Between 1950 and 1960, women with full time jobs earned on average between 59 and 64 cents for every dollar their male coworkers earned in the same job.

It wasn't until the Equal Pay Act was passed on June 10, 1963 (became effective on June 11, 1964) that it became illegal to pay women lower rates for the same job because of their sex. Gender could no longer be viewed as a drawback on someone's resume.

Some argue that even today, there is a pay gap between men's and women's wages.

https://www.infoplease.com/equal-pay-act

The so called "permissive" or "swinging sixties" has become a strong metaphor for contemporary social conflict. For progressives it is heralded as a time of revolutionary ferment which ushered in much needed social change, ushering in the civil rights movements, women's liberation, gay and lesbian liberation as well as green and peace movements. For conservatives it has become a scapegoat to blame many contemporary problems upon. Issues such as pornography, marriage breakdowns, single parent families, welfare state dependency, drugs and youth crime are all seen as having their origins in the "permissiveness" of the sixties. For the generation after the sixties, the love children of the baby boomers, it is often seen as a failed project which sustains their parents romanticising their youth prior to selling out.

Sexuality became political, emerging as an axis around which new social movements organised.
There were shifts in the relations between women and men, particularly those inspired by the emergent women's liberation movements. This parallels women's increased presence in the public realm and personal autonomy concerning reproductive choices and sexual expression.
The political mobilisation of the gay & lesbian movement.

Acceptance of sex between gay men and women has tripled since the 70s, with the most growth happening amongst young people. Just over 1 in every 5 young people who were between 18 and 29 in the 1970s said sex between people of the same gender was "not wrong at all." By the 90s, this percentage rose to 26%. By the 2010s, more than half of Millennials (56%) approve of sex between same-sex partners.

http://www.isis.aust.com/stephan/writings/sexuality/revo.htm
http://uk.businessinsider.com/how-attitudes-about-sex-have-changed-since-the-70s-2015-6?r=US&IR=T

Born on January 19, 1946, in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, Dolly Parton was one of 12 children. One of the most accomplished and recognized singers in America, Dolly Parton had 25 number one songs on the country Billboard charts. She has also starred in films like 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, and opened her Dollywood theme park in 1986. Parton perhaps reached the apex of her mainstream success in the 1980s. She not only starred with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the 1980 hit comedy 9 to 5, which marked her film debut, but also contributed to its soundtrack. The title song, with one of the most memorable opening lines in popular music history, proved to be another number 1 hit for Parton on both the pop and country charts and earned her an Academy Award nomination.

Dolly Parton has worked with charitable organizations in support of many causes over the years and had established her own Dollywood Foundation in 1996. With a goal of improving literacy among young children, she created Dolly's Imagination Library, a program which donates more than 10 million books to children every year.

In 1979 the tailored suit dominated daytime and evening wear. Quickly vanished had the days of casual sportswear, which had been so popular throughout the 1970s. People were tired of the casual look and had gotten back into businesswear.
By 1979, fashion that was known as “seventies” fashion had fully transformed into what people now would think of as eighties fashion. As the eighties approached, the fashion world seemed to have gotten a head start.
With an increased emphasis on formality, blazers and pants skirts became much more easily mixed and matched. The trend of heavily padded shoulders first hit the scene in 1978, which borrowed and somewhat exaggerated the 1940s look, had surged more visibly into the mainstream in 1979.

Fashion designers had to promptly react to the fact that there were an unprecedented number of women in the workforce. Design houses had gotten used to spending the bulk of their time creating clothing for women who were at home or at parties, not in the office. But times were certainly changing and the most successful designers saw this opportunity for a new market, they adapted, and capitalized.

The Executive Woman owned at least one tailored suit. The jacket could be either short and shapely or long and lean. The straight skirt was knee-length and could possibly have a front or side slit that put a subtle emphasis on the legs. To offset the more traditionally masculine look of “business suit style”, women were experimenting with hats, high heels, ruffles that peaked out from the jacket and large jewelry to keep a confident, yet feminine, look in tact.

The most popular color combinations in 1979 were red and black, black and white, and white and red. Deep dark grays (think charcoal) were also popular, as were earth tones in about any combination you can imagine. If a splash of color was desired, some derivative of purple was usually the preferred choice.

As well as this, I also helped to paint the set which includes an entrance to Mr. Hart;s office and a bookcase. We had limited colours so had to use our knowledge to be able to mix colours so get varying shades for the books and bookcase.

We chose the brown that we did as it is more of a dull colour, resembling the drag and dreary feeling of working from 9 to 5.

We also chose not to outline all the features in the set as that is something that is usually done in pantomines to make it look more bold and comic like. For the look, we wanted it to look more realistic rather than bold as one of our theatrical choices.

For our audition, we had to choose who we were interested in playing. For me it was Roz Keith. From there, we had to pick a suitable song that relates to the character. For example, Heart to Hart is about Roz confessing her love and Lust for the boss, Mr Heart, So to relate to this, I chose the song History of Wrong Guys from Kinky Boots as It could allow me to act within the song. It also relates to the situation Roz is in with Mr. Hart so I feel like it could start me off on my character development.

That way we didnt have to move any of the set saving time and space backstage. We could also use this to our advantage as we could set all other other scenes within the office or in front on it and on the steps.

In this number it showed the members of the cast or office getting ready for their work day. From "tumble(ing) out af bed...stumble to the kitchen" and "yawn and stretch and try to come to life". The actions used shows them trying to wake themselves up and prepare for the day by showering and looking tired. We used an action of looking at a watch to signify the 9 to 5 day. The running gestures show the characters having to rush and further movements show their frustration for never getting credit for their hard work, driving them "crazy" Throughout the number we use movements to show a daily morning routine that is familiar for the worker. Later on in the dance when we walk in the circle, It could signify a clock or the endless work cycle they have to go through daily. It is purposely made to look busy and hectic as that is what their lives are. When we filter off, it allows the audience to still watch the office come to life whilst still enjoying the song and smoothly transitioning into the next number.

With this number we did need to have a few more rehearsals before we felt confident as a few of us had to change the arms and legs we were using to step at the beginning in order to be doing the same movement.

As we got the backing tracks and the voice overs, we had to adjust the beginning of the song when we rise and fall as we kept getting confused over when to start. This was a last minute change which proved beneficial as it tidied up the choreography and kept us in sync. The aim of this number is to introduce the musical and set the scene.

She explains the regular goings on, rules, regulations and how to get the job done without having problems.

Later on in this number Margaret Is being wheeled across the stage, We decided on Violet dodging her whilst Judy is almost hit by her showing that it is a usual everyday occurrence in the office.

As Roz enters the scene, the office workers look irritated as she is the office gossip and isn't liked very much by anyone in the office. She is quite confident as she sees herself above everyone else being Mr. Harts right hand.

In the background something is always going on, showing how busy the office is and how the job is important to get done shown through "no breaks, no snacks, no personal effects" getting in the way of their work. At the end of the number, Judy is more confident with the job she has to do knowing the importance of their hard work and commitment, no matter how dreary it is.
The aim of this number is to set the scene of the office and show how they run.

In this number, Hart expresses that he lusts over Doralee, the sexy, sweet country girl and will to anything to "have (his) way with her",

At the beginning of the rehearsal process for this song, we had to change the staging and choreography as we thought it was too much when it came to Mr. Hart flirting. As well as this, due to the casting being switched, we had to change the choreography around again a bit to suit Rupert.

Show day was the first day that we were able to use the sofa for the office. Due to this, the number needed to be rehearsed a few times so they knew what space they had. Nearer the end of the number, Hart jumps on Doralee causing her to have to force him off onto the floor. This also had to be rehearsed a fair bit to choreograph the fall onto the sofa and where he is pushed off to see how he would land. This was to avoid injury as it was a hard floor in close proximity to the steps which he could have fallen down if it didnt go correctly

This number picks apart the troubles all three leading ladies deal with outside of work. Violet being a single widowed mother of a teenager, Judy going through a rough divorce after her husband has an affair with his secretary and Doralee being ignored and shunned in the office as well as having no friends no matter how nice she is to everyone.

At first we all came in as the harmonies started. However we decided that it look messy and chaotic. So we were given numbers and points in the song to come on, mine of which was "though I suffer". We collectively thought that it looked neater and more organised and less busy compared to how we wanted 9 to 5 to look. As soon as the song finished, it also made our transition into the next scene smoother and quicker to set.

In this song, Doralee tries to make Judy understand her when she asks what everyone has said about her and Judy is trying to "go with the flow" of the office. In the first part she sings to her before she is dragged away by Violet.

She then sings towards the audience, as she hasnt been given a chance to show much of her character at this point. The aim within this is to show that Doralee is a likeable and sweet character, the opposite to how she has been made out up to this point.

In this song, Roz confesses her love for Mr hart to the audience, openly talking about her fantasies and lust for him. She seems well behaved throughout the show until this point where the audience see a completely different side to her, confidently shining in her spotlight.

When I was given the role of Roz, I had listened to this song and thought that it would be a complete challenge for me and my confidence when it came to building her character. At the beginning the main feedback I received was to be more confident and outgoing, especially during this song. I had a lot of difficulty in the beginning as I felt awkward with the suggestive lyrics. However, the more I sung it, the more I felt like the character. I had spent many singing sessions going through it and learning new techniques to enable myself to show the character such as using a lower and huskier voice. I also had problems with being able to belt the notes and kept going into head voice which frustrated me a lot. However, I had taken the advice of resting my voice and not overdoing the singing. I also changed my diet to foods that wouldnt affect my voice such as cutting out carbonated drinks and avoiding dairy. It proved to help my voice as I found it easier to hold longer notes as being able to put the power behind it. Finally in the last week, I had achieved being able to move about and sing whilst being able to do the belts without being too out of breath, another problem i encountered throughout the rehearsal process.

In each song, Judy, Violet and Doralee share their fantasies about eliminating Mr. Hart after they get high.

In Judy's fantasy, she is completely opposite of her characterisation so far in the show. She is sexy, confident and alluring, using her prowess to lure Hart to his death. Before we got the backing tracks we had a set choreography for Judy. However, when we got the tracks, there was a slapping sound effect where she slaps Hart at "C'mon sweetheart". In order to work with the sounds, the choreography had to change slightly. However, It worked out better adding more of a comical effect to a comical song.

In cowgirl's revenge, Doralee is in her element visiting her country roots with square and barn dancing, and even torturing Hart by putting him through the sexual harassment she deals with as well as poking him with a branding iron. This number had to be run many times as a few people still didnt know the steps on the day of the show. However, on the night things tidied up and it looked a lot neater.

Potion notion again showed a completely different side to Violet acting as a Disney Princess, compared to how she usually is. Independent, tough and outspoken. This was all blocked by Harriett. It was made to look like a crazy princess who is making a potent potion to kill Mr. Hart. This is shown through her maniacal giggles and funny expressions when shes singing.

It is in this number that you see Judy's character develop and become more confident. They all step up and take charge, one of the significant events of the show that enforces women's empowerment.

The use of our props in this number allows us to foreshadow what will happen in the second act, showing the audience what is in store. It is also comical as I come on with a missing poster with Hart's face on it, showing that Roz is the only one who cares that he is missing.

In this number, it shows Violets lifelong dream to have a superior role in the office, even CEO which she feels is impossible. We all agreed this song would be better off a tap dance for a few reasons. One is because of the jazzy tone to the song would suit the style. Two because tap dance is a new dance style we have explored this year and would have liked to include in order to implement the new skills we have learned. Reason three is because it gives a different variation of dance compared to what we have used before in the show so it is changed up and hooks the audience.

The aim of this number is to show Violet's feelings towards maybe moving up in the industry and reflecting on what could happen in the future without Mr. Hart there running the office. The dancers are dressed in suits an ties to show Violet's superiority over the males who have always been above her without putting in as much work as she has (could be linked to Bob Enright getting the promotion she was working towards).

With it being more basic, I could express her heartbreak with being send off to Colorado from her beloved Mr. Hart but I could also convey humour keeping with the nature of her character. This video was the first time i performed this song and I was given feedback to make it look less sweet and incorporate some more activity to enable her comedic nature to show through. When I sung through it a second time, I decided to blow a kiss towards Mr. Hart's office to show her love for him. i also feel that by having props later on, I was able to use more expression within the song as I didnt feel strange just standing and singing to the audience.

This number shows the changes that Judy has gone through throughout the musical, from needing her husband to getting over him cheating on her and "moving on at last" from him. Throughout the song you see her become stronger and compared to the scene before she doesn't feel the need to justify her actions as she doesn't owe anything to her ex husband.

The purpose of this song is to sum up the whole production, summing up what happened to the main characters (Violet, Judy, Doralee, Roz and Mr. Hart) and how life is for them in the future. Some feedback I received during my small bit of text was to look more in love with Missy when she enters instead of just hugging each other, to then smiling and embracing like we were a couple. It is an important bit in the finale as Missy hasnt been seen since the first act and was bound to be brought up again at some point after Mr. Hart disappears.

In this session, we started working on the choreography for the number 9 to 5, the opening number to the musical. The aim of this number is to introduce the musical and the three leading female roles. The key moments in this number is the introduction of these three characters, Violet, Doralee and Judy as it gives the audience their back stories and background before they start their journey in the office. We have decided to match the actions with the lyrics. For example, "Yawn and stretch and try to come to life" have the movements of trying to wake up for the work day and "jump in the shower and the blood starts pumping" showing their daily morning routine before they leave for the day. I thought that because my character Roz isnt introduced until the number Around here that I should wear very minimal costume of just the wig, skirt and shirt until the next number where i wear full costume with my clipboard and memos. This is because this number is focusing on the leading three instead of all other characters. This song is directed towards the audience as it tells the story of these workers and gives them the basic information they need to understand what is to come further on. I feel like I picked this number up very quickly and easily and was able to help others learn the steps as I felt fairly confident with the choreography.

Today we learned the choreography to Around here, the number where Roz is introduced to the audience. The aim of this number is to introduce the office and its principles and regulations to Judy, who has never worked an office job before after spending her life to look after her husband as a housewife. This introduction is key for the audience to know what life is like in the office in the 1970's to keep it efficient and productive. Another key moment is the introduction of my character Roz Keith. She is confident but a snitch and gossip so everyone tends to avoid her which is shown when she enters the office as the workers all look irritated and go back to their desks. Some feedback I received was to be confident and look authoritative as she is the second hand to the boss and needs to make it clear to the new addition to the office. When she exits, I was told to look chirpy as I am reporting back to Mr, Hart, whom she has a huge interested in romantically. However, the audience do not know this at this point in time. The song is telling the audience what daily life it like there and what is expected from them. This could also be shown through Margaret, the office drunk, being dragged across the stage like it happens all the time, especially when Violet dodges her with no hesitation. This number starts off the journey to characterising Roz and developing her to opening her up to the audience. She stays like his until her solo Heart to Hart where a different side of her is seen. I have looked at different videos of this song as well as Heart to hart to take ideas of what to use to portray her character. The more we did this number, the more confident I became especially as Id learned my lines for this scene.

This included the numbers 9 to 5 and Around here, plus the scenes in between and after before were introduced to Mr. Hart. Even though I was already pretty happy with how well I knew it, there was always room for improvement when refining moves and working on my posture. It felt different doing it in heels rather than trainers as it helped me with my posture and balance as well as helping me become my character. By watching the videos of rehearsals, I know where I need to improve for next week so I will go over the dances whenever I have free time as well as doing line runs to learn them ready for the next few scenes we need to work on.

As I am a mezzo soprano I decided to join the higher singer group as I find it more comfortable. I am also willing to take on the harder harmonies as Id like to challenge myself. I recorded these harmonies so I could rehearse them at home as well as having them to refer back to if I needed to. This contrasts to my character as she is an alto singer and has a huskier and deeper voice when she sings. This way I am able to contrast my ensemble character and main character.

I wasnt in this session so I had someone record the harmonies for me so I was able to learn them. I went over the song in my spare time and rehearsed the harmonies in order to catch up for the next session so I wasnt falling behind. This allowed me to make adjustments to what I was doing and spend time with the rest of the class to get them right and polish them so It was one less thing to put all of my focus into. I found these harmonies quite straightforward compared to 9 to 5.

Within this session we decided on having independent rehearsals, so those that were not needed could work on coursework or help start making the props and costume list that we needed. I worked with Harriett, Sophie and Rosie doing the elevator scene where Maria is fired and the girls go home to unwind. I figured that with Roz having a close eye on them after what occurred in Hart's office before with Violet that I could get away with stalking in and questioning them as it wasnt time for their break. She starts off authoritative however Violet soon puts her in her place by yelling at her saying "Get off my back Roz were taking a coffee break!" I figured that once I knew my lines It was a good idea to react to this line and letting her get in my face. At first I found it very difficult to not corpse and start laughing. However after a few more rehearsals I got used to this and could them react further by pulling away. After she leaves, I straighten myself out before anyone else sees me and then hand Maria her notice of her termination from employment (pink slip).

This week, the dancers learned the choreography to my song Heart to Hart. This allowed me to go over my basic steps that I had prepared for the song so I could start developing it. I had decided on definite things to do during the song but will adjust this in the future once I am more confident. I did feel awkward at first singing this song as It is completely out of my comfort zone. One thing I need to improve on is to learn the song properly as I did stumble over a lot of the lyrics. As well as this, I need to learn to not feel so self conscious, however this is a big step for me to overcome.

Further on in the week, we staged the dances to the fantasy scenes, Dance of death, cowgirls revenge and potion notion. I was placed in Violet's fantasy scene, where i try to put an apple into her cauldron when shes making the potion for Mr. Hart's coffee. Keeping with the comical setting, me and Harriett decided instead of just walking on and putting it in, to struggle to attempt to add the apple to the potion. She would then try and avoid me like everyone else in the office does, I show my frustration and walk off looking irritated. Even though it is a small piece of the number, it can still add to the comedy of the song. I gave feedback to the dancers in cowgirls revenge telling them that they needed more rehearsal on the dance as they were out of time and a few were stumbling over the moves. They put aside a time to rehearse and the next time we saw it, It looked tidier than it did before.

During this week, Me and Rosie decided to help each other create social media pages in order to be able to advertise the show. We created an event on facebook for the show and sent out invites to friends. We also shared it and got others to share to spread the word around. Through this we could also show our audience our progress up until she show date as well as share our poster and ticket information.

Nearer the end of the week, we learned the song Shine like the sun as well as the choreography. This was fairly simple as we used this song to foreshadow what was happening in the second act. In this scene, I come on with a missing poster for Mr. Hart as im the only person who realises that he hasnt been seen in the office and gets concerned. From this session, I knew that I had to put a wanted poster on the list of props to do when I had the time. We decided in the end that we needed to do the backing vocals instead f the three girls singing the song alone as It didnt sound as effective as we'd liked. However this saved them having to do difficult harmonies that they kept getting confused over.

We also used this week to independently rehearse scenes that hadn't been covered, mostly the ones that I was in as I had been unwell and unable to come in for some sessions. The rest of the class had started to make whatever props that we could make by hand. This included my poster, plane ticket, key as well as brochures, maps and flower bouquets.

During the tech/dress run we found that it went extremely well as we had adjusted to using the set. I felt by doing it on the stage I was ready for the actual show and it made me more enthusiastic and optimistic. This was our only day with the full cast together.

After the run, we picked our some songs that needed some last minute polishing, these were Heart to hart, cowgirls revenge and one of the boys. I had used this time to go over my lines and my song as well as doing a proper vocal warmup to prepare myself.

I had loads of good feedback about the show and the people that I knew had thoroughly enjoyed it, making them laugh and become hooked into the storylines of each main character. They got the jokes and innuendos within the show and it felt good knowing that outside eyes had appreciated the funny moments that we hadnt experienced laughter from before. I am very proud of what he have produced as a cast and it went so mich better than any of us had expected. I felt in the moment and enjoyed every minute of it.

Problem solving

One problem we encountered during the rehearsal process was that we didnt get the backing tracks until two to three weeks before the show. One issue this gave us was that we didnt know what they would be like so might have had to change the harmonies we had been learning over the past few weeks which would have added more stress due to us only having two singing rehearsals a week. However when we received them, there were only one or two sets of harmonies that needed changing so these were quick to learn.

Another problem we had was not being able to use the stage to rehearse, not allowing us to know our true space to use on the day of the show. However, whilst doing our runs in the theatre on the day, it didint take too long to sort out the spacing for each scene and song as it was only the dances that we needed to focus on so we were able to use the full space, Whilst doing this, we could also arrange who was bringing on which prop/set for the first number, something we hadnt been too sure on before.

Another issue we had was that we hadnt rehearsed with our microphones before, so this took more time adjusting to than it should have, reducing more rehearsal time we could have had. Luckily, we had been familiar with using them before so we knew roughly how to take care of them and efficiently swap over if needed. Another problem with this is during the rehearsal process, most were used to talking on the side of the stage so we were worried that this would be a big problem when our mics were turned on backstage. However, this wasnt as big as we had thought as everyone was concentrating on the perforamance and werent being distracted, causing little to no talking on the sides.

What did I do independently?

One aspect of this show that I lead and conducted independently was a bake sale I held nearer the beginning on the project. The purpose of this was to fundraise for my costume and props as well as anything else we needed to buy for the show. I arranged the date of this bake sale as well as baking my own goods to sell, getting the table decoration in order to attract customers and asking for contributions towards product to sell and a few helping hands to help me advertise and sell our goods. This was successful, raising £66 which brought my costume, wig and reimbursed me for buying ingredients and decoration.

Why did we choose to do 9 to 5 the musical?

We felt that this was the most appropriate choice for our group as we didnt need a big ensemble, catering to each persons individual talents whether it be singing, dancing or acting. It was also appropriate as we had a mainly female cast and it was perfect for allowing the second years a chance at leads and talking parts without having too many males that we didnt have to cast either. Compared to our other two choices, this production allowed almost everyone to have a speaking part in the production not leaving anyone feeling excluded. We also thought that this would be best for those to play multiple roles, showing they can switch characters with each scene, something that an ensemble role should be able to do and is needed with most productions.
