Video #2- Understanding Your Health Insurance Costs | Consumer Reports

I chose this video to explain how the cost of health works. This video is to inform people where their money goes to when purchasing a health care plan. I learned the three main ideas you will need to know Deductible, Premiums, and Out-of-pocket maximum. Premiums are the payments you `will pay monthly when buying into health insurance. Premium help pays towards preventative care, but when you can’t pay directly for your care, your insurance will reimburse that fee. The deductible is the money you’ll have to pay before your insurance company will share the cost. When you reach a certain amount paying into your plan before the year is up, your insurance “Out-of-pocket-maximum” will pay the rest for that year.

This video shows the health care that is not covered by your government health plan. I picked this video to show the types of questions people have when choosing the right coverage, you can receive with an insurance company. Some people don’t know they need extra coverage to ensure they are taking the preventive measure. You don't need to get coverage you will never use and get the additional help with the care that’s right for you and that fits your budget. In this video I learned about the “Follow me plan” Manulife has, if you get laid off or quit your job, you will still be covered.

Website #1-Supplementary Health & Dental Insurance 101

The reason why I picked this website was to show what is supplementary Health Insurance. Supplementary Health Insurance is an Extended health insurance plan used to cover different types of insurance like Vision care, Dental care, and prescription drugs. Prescription drug, medical exams, vaccinations, semi-private/private hospital rooms, massage therapy, chiropractors, etc, is not cover through OHIP so you will have to pay out of pocket for expensive drugs that cost a fortune. As of January 2018, prescription drugs are covered through OHIP to youth 24 and under. So, adding additional coverage will help with other health care that’s not covered under OHIP coverage.

I decided to use this website to show the average wait times in a hospital in Canada. Seeing how long it takes to see a physician can make you think about getting Hospitalization insurance. There is a wait time for the beds in the emergency room, to get a CT or MRI scan. Being aware of the wait time will make you more aware of the real-life experiences Canadians go through and the process it takes to recover. I learned It takes 4 hours for the average patient not admitted to staying overnight and 93% of patients on average are there for 8 hours for emergency visits.

I chose this website to help low-income Canadians get a better understanding of the cost of Health insurance and compare it to their family income. This website shows how affordable Health insurance, but the majority still cannot afford low monthly premiums. I learned even though OHIP claims health care is free 10% of low-income families without health insurance will still have to pay $496. Even for higher income earners, are still faced with paying out of pocket because they are misleading the public. What about the homeless Canadians, working the poor, or Native Indians who are still unable to afford these monthly premiums. Canada needs to re-evaluate the needs of low-income Canadians livelihood.
