Why is digital citizenship important?

I think that it is important to teach students about digital citizenship because so much of the rest of their academic careers will be online. Starting from a young age they will need to know these things. For example, how to do proper searches on various search engines, how to prevent cyberbullying, and being aware that there is such a thing as too much time spent online.

This is a webpage designed for students to come to if they are experiencing cyberbullying and also just to learn about how to prevent/ stop it. The site uses bullet points and short statements that would be easy to read and also easy to remember. Towards the end there is a video of roleplaying a cyberbullying situation.

This tool is a printable poster that could be hung in the classroom. You could also print one for each individual student so they could have it to review before going online. The website this was created on also has some more tips about digital citizenship you can share with your students.

This resource will be good to use with younger students (probably K-3) about how to keep personal information private. While it is a shorter video clip, it still has a big focus on how to still use 'stranger danger' in an online setting. This would be something you could play a few times a semester to remind them since it doesn't take up much time.
