Its effects and integration are inevitable even in education. Living in this age, technology has always been integrated into our lessons in high school up to college. Every quarter, we discover a new application or new software that can be helpful and useful in our future career, which is teaching. New doors of knowledge and experiences in technology integration have always been opening every semester, thanks to our college professors. But even with these skills being taught to us, what I noticed in our college is that they always keep the balance between technology and humanities (which is imbued on our school’s name). I realized that human connection is vital in education and we should not compromise it just because we have the technology. I recognized that technology cannot give our students emotional intelligence. Reflecting on the past semesters, I learned that human interaction (teacher to student and vice versa) should always be there accompanied by the integration of technology. This molded my perspective that as a teacher, I should always keep the balance of technology and humanities. This means that aside from sharing my lesson in a PowerPoint presentation, I should also share myself with my students. Learning theories are systematized concept that helps us understand how and why people learn. As future teachers, it is important to use a learning theory as a basis for instruction. These theories give us an idea of how our learners will learn on a specific approach and what other strategies can we do to enhance their skills. In our class, our professor discussed the three main learning theories which are behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism. I learned and realized two things after reflecting upon our lesson. First, the purpose is very important. Purpose gives direction to teachers on what approach or theory will apply. If the purpose is to condition, then behaviorism should be used. If sense-making is the aim, cognitivism can be applied. If the teacher wants the students to be heavily active and create their own meaning from their own experiences and prior knowledge, then constructivism can be applied. Various learning theories can offer different approaches. Second and lastly, creativity is key. As a future-teacher, we should recognize that technology is really advancing, and we should cope up and be creative in our lessons. Engaging the students will be a challenge for teachers that is why we should integrate technology and creativity into our lessons effectively. I think that through this, aside from professional development, we also help our students to succeed in life.

The question is, are we, teachers, ready for this? Our last lesson for prelims is about instructional design and technology integration in the classroom. Ms. Acar advised us to answer the Technology Self-Assessment Tool for us to gauge our skills in terms of technology integration in the classroom. It comprises 4 levels where you need to have 100% mastery on three aspects before proceeding to the next level. As I took the tool, it reflected that I am still in Early Technology having 88% on Technology Operations and Concepts, 50% on ethics and safety, and 80% on Teaching and Learning with Technology. After our lesson and seeing these results, I realized three things. First, even I, who was born in the 21st century, am still not technologically skilled and has a lot to learn. This made me think that even though we are exposed to technology we still need proper training on various aspects. Like in my result, I rarely know about ethics and safety, which is a critical aspect of technology. I will face a bunch of technologically advanced students in the future and this poses a challenge for me to improve and better myself. Learning is indeed lifelong, and we teachers should not settle for less. Second, a proper framework for instruction is necessary. Different instructional designs and technology integration frameworks provide a guide and skeleton for the teaching-learning process. Hence, this will be a big help in aiding the teachers on where to start, what to follow, what to use and integrate, and how to asses? Lastly, I realized that technology can be of big help in teaching mathematics. How we present and introduce mathematical concepts matters to our students because math in its nature is hard and complicated. But with proper use of effective instructional design and technology integration framework, it can be leveled up. Instructional designs can guide us throughout our instruction process and provides various ways of presenting concepts. Through this, we can assess in which way can a lesson be properly delivered in class. On the other hand, technology integration frameworks provide knowledge that is necessary for effective utilization of technology, and skills to redefine and upgrade our teaching strategies. They layout significant techniques that we can incorporate in our future classrooms to spark engagement and motivation to learners, which we know is vital in learning. These can be our game-changers. Indeed, math is challenging, and teaching it is whole another level. The lesson is worthwhile and relevant because as teachers, we should be equipped with skills so that we can be ready for the future and we can ready our students for the future. There are three main reflections that are marked on my head after the lesson proper. First, the role of a teacher in this Fourth Industrial Revolution in Education is really challenging. Given the fast-changing world, we teachers should prepare our learners for a much more advanced future. As teachers of 21st-century learners, we should prepare them for things that are not yet existing at present but will soon be present in the future. Innovation in teaching is really challenging but a significant part of building children a better future. Second, there are a lot of tools that a teacher can use to integrate technology as well as provide, engage, and assess learning. Even though there are a lot of tools that a teacher can use in different stages of the lesson flow or parts of the lesson, it is still important to take note to look back to the goal. Looking back to our goals or learning outcomes can guide us on what proper and effective tool we can utilize. I learned that it is not always the fanciness or the coolness of the tool that we should look into, but its efficiency in achieving our learning goals. And lastly, the fun can really be part of mathematics. Ms. Acar taught us EdPuzzle and Goosechase which are fun and amazing tools that we can use to integrate fun while learning. I realized how we can level up simple video watching through eEdPuzzle and how we can make them move and do fun missions through goose-chase. Learning these things is really helpful because this will gear up our skills and knowledge. Generally, the lesson is helpful and engaging even though it is just online. I really had fun knowing the “behind-the-scenes” of the assessments, activities, and tools that we have used in the previous years as students.

How can I engage my students? How can I make learning fun and interactive? These are the questions that augmented reality answers. Augmented reality are visual/digital enhancements integrated with real-world objects and places. Augmented reality is a one great tool for engagement in the class. Just using mobile phones, scanning codes or photos, and many more, students can be engaged in learning because they can see 3D models of what they are learning. As I do the Augmented Reality activity, to be honest, I am really challenged. First, my personal phone has malfunctioned camera. So, I had to ask my cousins to help me with this activity. And second, I am not good at anything with editing videos and such. I took this challenge and I really had fun doing it. It is nice to play with the objects and see how this augmented reality app (ARLOOPA) can do. I explored it first and tried modifying size, position, etc. It was fun and amazing. My cousins were also amazed. I, myself, was really engaged in doing this and I could only imagine how much more in my future classrooms. I realized that this is a step closer in making learning come to life. Through my experience, I can say that Augmented Reality can be the key for a better teaching-learning process.

Even though cheating is one of the main problems in online assessment, there are various online tools that can be used for both formative and summative assessments. Ms. Acar taught us about Quizlet, FlipGrid, and Gimkit, which are helpful tools for interactive and fun assessments. Quizlet is a great tool for formative assessment, for reviews, and other similar things. Flipgrid is good for interactive assessments that involves video-taking. While Gimkit is useful for quick summative tests or quizzes. These tools are effective for assessments and can really engage students. At that time, I realize how resourceful and amazing teaching is because whatever platform or scenario we are in, there are various ways to overcome it. Moreover, feedback can be faster in terms of online assessment. Most importantly, engagement of students will be greater with the use of these and other interactive assessment tools. Ms. Acar also taught us the EquatIO, which is an extension that can aid math teachers in typing formulas or equations. I really find this amazing and helpful because it is really hard to input equations and formulas to google forms or other platforms. With the use of this extension, typing math equations will be easier and the students will understand it better. In summary, I learned and realized that there will always be cons or disadvantages of a certain tool for teaching and/or assessing and we should recognize it. With the past few years, there are a spread of fake news all over the social media, where most of the students are also in. Our TECHNO2 class is about reliability and credibility of sources. It was very informative because even I am immersed on the internet for years, I am not confident enough in terms of assessing accuracy of sources. I learned a lot on how we can assess valid and reliable sources in terms of technical aspect (url, design, extension, etc.) and content (authors, organizations, updates, etc.). After our lesson on TECHNO2, I realized 2 things. First, since most of the 21st century learners are immersed in social media and internet, there is a big possibility that they can encounter fake news. This may lead to various things such as fear and/or confusion. Some news or sources that are hoax may cause fear for learners who accessed it. For example, they might see fake sources about volcanic eruption, and they might panic or be scared. News and learning resources that are not reliable may also cause confusion, especially with education. One might believe or determine a source to be valid even though it is not. For example, learning about different statistical methods. If the learner encounter learning resource that has inaccurate information, this might lead to confusion not just to the student but also to his/her classmates and/or teachers. And this is alarming, and we should really take action. This leads me to my second realization, as teachers, we can do something. As teachers, we should use our voice to combat fake news and educate the students how to assess and evaluate credible and accurate sources of information. This is a challenge because we, teachers, can also be victims of fake news but it is a challenge for us to conquer. I really loved when Ms. Acar told us that the information we give and let the students access are body of knowledge already and they will bring it onwards, hence, we should be careful and critical about it. Indeed, misinformation and disinformation heavily impact education and taking action is the only way we can do.

I learned that Digital Playlist has been in demand, especially, now that we are in distance learning. Ms. Acar taught us the advantages of digital playlist especially if we are promoting independent and self-paced learning. I learned that in this time where engagement is really hard to transpire in the students, digital playlist can be helpful for the teaching and learning process. Through our lesson, I reflected three things. First, think of the students. As a teacher, it is important to always think of the students in crafting our digital playlist. We should always bear in mind that they will consume this, and this should be easy to understand. Second, rethink what is essential. Given that there is not enough time to tackle everything in the curriculum, we should rethink what lessons or topics do the students need. And that is where we start. Lastly, creativity and simplicity is key. Digital Playlist may seem a ‘fancy’ term but it is easy to make as long as you are creative. We do not need a lot of things, making a simple, creative, and essential digital playlist for our students is beyond great already. Who knows we can use google docs or even google forms in making digital playlist? We, teachers, should really be resourceful and creative. When Ms. Acar told us that we will be using Google Forms, I was first in doubt how can we do a digital playlist out of it, but after the lesson, I was really amazed on how google forms can be a potential and powerful tool in making digital playlists.

That is the first thing I felt when starting in my digital playlist because this is very new to me and I know it will be helpful for me. Planning it was the first thing I did. I made sure I am following a framework, so I used Gagne’s Nine Events of instruction. Moreover, I also ensure that students can have open communication with me, so I offered my email and also provided a discussion board. And lastly, I make sure that the activities will be beneficial/informative and light/not time-consuming for them at the same time. These plans guided my playlist-making process. In doing it, I started first with the framework and navigation. I first created blank sections and build how will the students be directed from different sections. I make the directions and settings clear first. After that, I prepared my content. I made a video where I am discussing and at the same time providing them with supplemental materials. After preparing the content such as the instruction and assessments, I put it on the playlist and gradually filling the blank sections. It took me long before I finished my playlist, but it is a fun experience. After doing this, to be honest, I am very happy and fulfilled because I did my best and I am proud of my work. That made me so excited to share this with Ms. Acar and my classmates. After the whole process of planning to make to finalizing and to presenting, I realized one thing. Education never stops. This activity made me realize that whatever happens, education will always find its way. Creativity and resourcefulness while thinking about the welfare and learning of the students is my main takeaway in this activity. Learning will always continue because, in the presentation of my playlist, Ms. Acar gave her comments that will improve my playlist. Moreover, I also learned a lot from my classmates (topic for the next blog). Just like the quote I came across in Facebook, “We should never stop learning because life never stops teaching”.

The first will be Kenneth. In his presentation, I learned that putting a brief introduction to the tool that the students will be using is important. This will give the students on how the tool will work. For Mylene’s presentation, reminding is what I really admired in her digital playlist. Even though I provided a monitoring sheet as well, Mylene’s is different because she gives the link to the student every portion of the playlist which I think is important because this will remind the students on this part. Moreover, I also like that she put a self-assessment survey in the end. For Almira’s presentation, her playlist’s flow is really good. I liked the way she divides the lesson and organizes the flow of the playlist. This is the thing I want to improve on and I admire Almira’s playlist for that. For Roi’s, he put the affective side of mathematics which I think is important. This ensures that math is not purely cognitive factors but also affective factors. For Ferry’s presentation, I learned that as teachers, it is important to gauge your learners capability in accessing things. Her struggles were reflected in her playlist and I think it was great. Moreover, she also provides encouragement to the students every after a part of the playlist. These learnings just proved that learning is continuous. This project is really amazing. I learned a lot not just from my experience but also from my classmate’s playlists as well.
