The salt march started in 1930. The British increased a tax on Indian salt which raised the price of it. The Indians couldn't do anything with their salt. Ghandi decided to protest and organised the Salt March with thousand people called "freedom fighters". Most people joined the march, so they protested to British rule and unfairness. Ghandi with their followers walked over 200 miles and they found the salt! The march led to Indian's independence in 1947.

In 1857 there was a rebellion by Indian soldiers, but they lost in 1858 so India officially became a British colony. Britain ruled India until 1947. Trade with India, above all cotton industry (the cotton came from Indians farmes),made lots of money for Britain. However, the British tried to improve life for everyone.
