Why was transportation—particularly the canals and the railroads—so important in the early stages of industrialization?

The development of transportation, such as canals, railroads, highways, and steamships put the United States ahead in the turn towards industrialization . Before this most trade was along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. With the construction of the National Road trade along the east/west route was made easier. A major step forward for transportation was the Erie Canal. It linked the Great Lakes region to New York to European shipping routes. Due to this, the Northeast established itself as the United States' center of commerce and other canals were created in efforts to duplicate the positive effects the Erie Canal provided. Railroads gave a direct form of transportation to and from major cities throughout the United States therefore making it a very efficient form of transportation.

Which technological innovation was most important for early-nineteenth-century economic development?

The cotton gin was the most important for the early 19th century economic development because it put together 1st efficient machinery for spinning cotton thread in America. The cotton gin allowed for planters to clear more land for cotton as well it allowed for the Cotton Kingdom to expand westward. This demand for cotton created a higher demand on slavery in the South but over all the invention of the cotton gin caused the blossom of the American Industrial Revolution in cotton textiles.

What effects did the movement from a subsistence to a market economy have on American society, including farmers, laborers, and women? What were the advantages and disadvantages of the change?

With the increase in inventions farmers are able to plant more crops which leads to them being able to provide for more people in their areas. An increase in inventions meant that there would be more factories and more jobs therefore more immigrants and people needed for the jobs. This means that the need for labor was at a high. For women, factories meant that there was less of a need for their homemade goods and that single women could now work in factories. This lead to less children being born. The advantages of this was that there were more goods and the good were cheaper and that the family units where more close knit. The disadvantages were that workers were doing dangerous, low paying jobs and that the gap between the rich and the poor was increased.

What caused the market and transportation revolutions of the nineteenth century? As you read this chapter, how many different reasons for the development of these changes can you identify?

The need to be even with or a head of Britain was a main factor in the beginning of efficient industrialization of America. The market revolution was caused by an increase in inventions that made everyday things more convenient for people. These things include the Reaper, Cotton Gin, Sewing Machine, and the Telegraph. The Transportation Revolution all began with the desire of Americans to want to move west and the need to move the agricultural goods to the north and to move goods from the north to the south. America fixed this with the fixing of railroads, building of canals, fixing of roads and the creation of steamboats.

In this chapter, the authors maintain that “clearly the early factory system did not shower its benefits evenly on all.” What relevant historical evidence can you find in this chapter or the previous ones that supports, modifies, or refutes this assertion?

This statement is true because at this point in time slaves are limited in the work they can do for their country, most of them still working the fields in the south and now west and women are also being limited because only the single women are allowed to work in factories. This means the only group that was fully benefited by the factory system is white men.

As you read this chapter, can you combine the information from the primary source excerpts, tables, figures, maps, and text to create a persuasive understanding of westward migration and demographic changes in the United States from 1790 to 1860?

The purpose of westward migration was to find and utilize new resources for the states back east. People also moved west because taxes were low and the American people believed that the west would make them rich, that what they were doing would be sole profit. This however was not true and the national government consistently tried to tax the new western territories and many people were dying making the journey and contracting deathly illnesses as well. Demographic changes went from a large baby boom post war of 1812 with lots of people from this generation questioning why the nation was biased towards certain groups of people. These baby boomers are the ones that were fighting for women's rights and for better methods of transportation at the end of this time period.
