1. pg. 37: "At the end of the tryouts he was third fastest overall, which meant he had a place on the Holminster High School boys' swim team. It was as simple as that. He shook the hand of the square-headed man in the sweatpants, who turned out to be the swim coach, and then had his fingers crushed by the grip of someone who turned out to be the team captain. Back in the locker room the only attention he received this time was friendly nods and admiring glances." I chose this passage of the story because it shows that things were coming around for him. He isn't being noticed in the wrong way and that's why he went out for swimming. So he wouldn't be noticed in no activities and he would be a swimmer.

Oliver- Helpful- Oliver is helpful by telling Elliot what the guardians and who they are. In the book it says on page 39, " Let me tell you about the Guardians. This shows that he is helpful by him telling Elliot about the guardians.

Elliot's Mom- Exhausted- Elliot's Mom is exhausted because she doesn't even talk to Elliot any more, they eat in silence, and Elliot hears her cry in the morning. In the book it says on page 44," His mom seemed to be tired all the time-- too tired to talk to him, anyway." It also says, "A few times he woke in the early hours of the morning and heard his mom crying downstairs. This shows that his mother is exhausted because she doesn't even talk to Elliot anymore.

Boy being bullied- Helpless- The boy being bullied is helpless because he can't do anything about the boys shoving his face in the toilet. It says in page 48, " Being forced down again and again, sometimes five or six times, depending on how bored or angry they were." This shows that he is helpless because the boys are pushing him down and not letting him up.

2. pg.46: "He found himself on the edge of a rough semicircle in front of the toilet stalls. The crowd pushed against his back, eager and impatient. Its excitement spilled over in a continuous roar of noise, which, in the confined space was deafening." I chose this passage because he kind of shows us that he has a past getting bullied in a bathroom, by how he says, " He knew what was going to happen here. He had to get out". He is scared and nervous for what is going to happen because he's been there before and doesn't want to live through it again.
