THE WIND AND SEA OBEY ONLY ONE MAN

66 CE, GALLILEE.

MAN CALMS STORM WHILST ON MOVING BOAT

A great storm of wind arose during the crew members' deep sleep. Afraid, they woke up and desperately begged for mercy, when one special crew member arose from his sleep.
The man, who remains unknown, raised his hands and pleaded, 'Peace! Be still!" according to eye-witness, and the wind ceased.
Reports claim that this man truly is the Son of God, whilst others believe this “poser” must be crucified for his sins. All that can be said is that the wind and sea obey this man, and who else, if not the Son of God, would the wind and sea obey?

Jesus and his disciples were travelling across the Sea of Galilee on a small fishing boat with sails and oars. His disciples welcomed Jesus into one of the many boats and they sailed until they reached land. These old boats hint to us that this story is set many years ago, BCE, during a time where sailing was the only form of travelling across the ocean. This time context is important in order for readers to understand the thought process of Jesus and his disciples in this passage. Through this time context we can assume that the disciples that Jesus was with were less fortunate, as they were all cramped on a small fishing boat. Their fear of the storm becomes more understandable with this context because they would have lost all that they had captured whilst fishing, and his disciples would have fallen further into poverty.

Jesus was asleep in the boat whilst the rough storm was approaching, which means he was calm because of his faith in God. The disciples were scared, anxious, and confused why Jesus wasn't afraid until he calmed the storm, and they shouted “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”. This story teaches us that Jesus was on earth and suffering with us, he went through the same storm as his disciples. His faith and trust in God assisted him through these hardships, and Jesus assisted his disciples with the love of God. In this time, the poor and vulnerable would have been mistreated and would have been taken advantage of, but Jesus’ stories show us that kindness is free, and that everyone should be treated with respect. Jesus, who was a stranger to these men, saved their lives because he sees everyone as equal.

MARKS MESSAGE FOR CHRISTIANS IN 2024

Mark’s main message throughout all of his bible stories is the insistence of social justice. Through his passages he tells stories of healing and kindness in an attempt to inspire people to follow in the footsteps of Jesus by becoming a part of God’s kingdom, and helping others who are in need. Mark reminds us that no matter how unfortunate we may be, there is always someone who is suffering further, and you must be the person who is willing to sacrifice yourself to assist those in need. Those who follow God, follow Jesus. To truly believe in God is to truly be the most considerate person you can possibly be, and to always put others before yourself no matter who they are. This story is relevant for christians because it shows that Jesus is suffering with them. Jesus was on the boat with his disciples through the storm, and his faith in God allowed him to safely return himself and his disciples to shore without experiencing any damage from the storm. Which gives christians the message that Jesus is suffering with them, and the faith they have in God will allow them through their hardships.

WHAT IS MARK SAYING ABOUT JESUS?

Mark portrayed Jesus as a loving person, and as someone who aspires to save as many people as he possibly can. Mark also portrayed Jesus as the son of God who possesses the powers to prevent unfortunate events from happening, such as the storm in this passage. Jesus’ compassion stems from his faith and belief in God, and allows him to share this love with his disciples through his miracles. Through these texts Mark also portrayed Jesus as humble, by mentioning how Jesus did not want his disciples to spread the word of his own miracles, and instead wanted them to spread the love of God.

HOW IS THIS STORY RELEVANT TO MY OWN LIFE?

With the way the world lives today, Mark’s message is extremely relevant in current situations. People in this time aren’t often compassionate and commonly ignore those in need. If we were to listen to what Mark was saying in his stories, the world would be a significantly better place. Mark’s aim was to create world peace through the creation of God’s kingdom on earth, if all humans loved and cared for each other, all issues would be resolved and God’s kingdom would finally be on earth through the hearts of all people. People in 2024 need to learn to be more compassionate and need to learn how to care for one another, which is how Mark represented the image of Jesus in his passages.
This story, in specific, is relevant to my own life when I am experiencing hardships. It tells me that there is always a way through difficulties in life, and if I show my faith I will succeed through these hard times. If I feel as though a storm is coming, I must believe I can calm it, otherwise I will be following in the footsteps of Jesus’ disciples, not Jesus himself.
