         <description><![CDATA[<div>An 1896 landmark case that deemed the idea that "separate but equal" was constitutional. It upheld racial segregation in schools. It also allowed Jim Crow laws to become commonplace. The case stemmed from an 1892 incident when an African American passenger named Homer Plessy refused to sit in the "black only" section of a streetcar. </div>]]></description>
