Our community has come together to honor Silverio’s life and make sure our children and neighbors are safe from ICE in District 84. 

We want ICE out of our schools, out of Franklin Park, and out of Illinois. NOW. 

Thank YOU to everyone who has signed and shared the petition. Our tiny but growing crew appreciates all of you for protecting our students and neighbors. We’re in this together! 

Some of us will be attending tonight’s school board meeting (Oct. 15th) to keep fighting for the safe zone policy. Let us know if we’ll see you there!

There are schools in our communities who immediately put these policies and procedures in place even before the law was passed. There have been communities where maybe the percentage of immigrant students is much less, and so it might not be at the top of mind for those schools. It's those school districts where I am getting calls from that the families are still very concerned about sending their children to school. Those are the school districts that policies such as this are so critical.

Join Public School Strong District 84, PASO - West Suburban Project, and Hijas del Pueblo on Sunday, January 18th for a community event. We welcome neighbors and friends of Franklin Park. There will be a vigil for Silverio Villegas González, Renée Nicole Good, Keith Porter, and every life taken by ICE & Border Control. Everyone is invited to join a community circle before we walk together to Silverio’s memorial site at Emerson & Grand.

De Jesus Alejandre told of high school students giving each other shopping tips, pulling up pictures on their phones to teach other students how to differentiate between parsley and cilantro when shopping.

“While these young people demonstrate enormous strength and courage, ‘parentification’ of children is also associated with higher levels of risky behaviors as young people seek less-than-healthy coping mechanisms to deal with the enormous pressure to take care of their families,” de Jesus Alejandre said.

Their parents, she added, often grappled with guilt over burdening their children with these responsibilities.

Board member Rick Riddle said the students gave everyone a lesson in democracy. When elected leaders do things with which individuals disagree, taking action to communicate a message is appropriate, he said.

“I want to say something about democracy,” Riddle said. “We have leadership in our school from our young people who felt the need to get involved. We are going to be turning over power to you in a few years. Democracy is not always going to be there unless you fight for it."

This is what our world has come to: that teenagers had to walk out of their school to protest something that shouldn’t even be existing,” Mejia said Wednesday.
