In the article When Are You Really an Adult the author Julie Beck demonstrates that a person comes of age when each person's individual journey leads them into adulthood. People will experience different journeys that will help them grow and achieve adulthood. "In fact, if you think of the transition to “adulthood” as a collection of markers—getting a job, moving away from your parents, getting married, and having kids" one would believe that these factors would classify one as an adult. I do not believe that biological age determines adulthood. A person's maturity level I feel determines adulthood more than biological age. A mature person takes on responsibilities that include becoming a parent and taking care of children. Another example of a mature adult is a person who respects people's views and attitudes. "All of a sudden you are out in the world, and you have this insane array of options, but you don’t know which you should take". Many people experience conflicts with all the different options that are available to them such as marriage, career, and lifestyle choices.

In the article When Are You Really an Adult by Maria Cramer the author believes that human brain development is not complete until the age of 25. Complete human brain development does not coincide with a lot of societal pressures for adulthood milestones."Charlotte Lawson, 21, a fourth-year student at the University of Virginia says there are inconsistencies in society about adulthood. Like many others, she pointed out that the drinking age is higher than the age to join the armed services."

It is hard to believe that a person at the age of eighteen can vote and join the armed forces but is not allowed to consume alcohol. "But there is not much clarity in state laws. In Alaska, teenagers as young as 14 can get married with a court order. Only a handful of states allow drinking under 21 and that is under strict circumstances, like when a parent or legal guardian is present". I feel that a person should be given many opportunities to learn more about themselves to be able to transition from adolescence into adulthood. This road from teenager to adulthood may be bumpy at times but with patience and guidance it can be done successfully.

Julia Rendleman for The New York Times
