Silver Party
EVENT: Siege of Vicksburg
DATE: May 18 to July 4, 1863
PLACE: Vicksburg, Mississippi
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The Union Army of the Tennessee led by Ulysses S. Grant captured the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River, the town of Vicksburg, after a prolonged siege.
WHY IS VICKSBURG A TURNING POINT?:
- Controlling the entirety of the Mississippi River essentially cut the Confederacy in two, east and west. Armies between the two sides are now unable to communicate as well as before.
- The Mississippi River served as an important trade route in the Americas to transport goods. The Confederacy would lose a significant portion of trade due to the loss of this river.
- Over 29,000 Confederate forces surrendered or were killed in the battle, which was a considerable blow to the Southern military.
