Backwards planning is starting with the end goal in mind. Start with deciding how you will assess what kids have learned, and then create the assessment. Then, plan lessons to set them up for success.

Backwards planning, to me, is the process of knowing what end goal you have in mind and then creating the steps to get there. So if I wanted to have my students master tying their shoes, I need to have my end goal of tying their shoes. Then I need to think about how I would want to assess how they tie a shoe so I know whether or not they have mastered it. Then I would think about the steps that come before the assessment. What do they need to know before they pull the final knot in the bow? How do I teach them to get to the bow? How do I teach them how to hold the strings?
