There is no universal way to teach students, as each student learns different and will require different things from their teacher. This is why scaffolding and using different modalities in teaching are so important. I know that children can be visual, auditory, kinesthetic, verbal, or do it yourself type of learners. Appealing to all of these different types of learners will show that, as a teacher, you care about your class as a whole. In addition, I know that seeing things as an assest in children's learning rather than an issue can change the game for student's learning. Students do better when they know someone believes in them.

I learned about Piaget and his 4 stages of development: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. I learned about Vygotsky and how he strongly believes in modeling as students gain knowledge by the help of others. Vygotsky also believed in scaffolding and working within a child's zone of proximal development. Basically we do not want to challenge students way too much or too little, we want to challenge them just enough for them to grow. Lastly, I learned about the 3 tiers of academic language. Tier 1 is basic vocabulary that students know and see consistently. Tier 2 is vocabulary that students might not know, but is still seen across subjects. Tier 3 is vocabulary that is content specific and is harder for children to know.

Learning for each individual is just that, individual! When we as educators can grasp there is a vast understanding of how universally people can learn new concepts, we find that theories can become the blanket that covers learning materials. I learned that through Piaget's theories, children "construct" meanings to the world based on their surroundings and self-experience. Another theory I learned was that of Vygotsky's explanation of how children need a lending hand before expanding the subject and knowing it independently. In these theories, I learned that when exposing students to new concepts, I can use prior knowledge to build on defining and guiding towards our learning objective, and slowly take off the "training wheels".

Vygostky and Piaget learning theories were a good review of the different ways students learn and the cognitive and physical pieces needed for children to learn new things.

Also, that if we want learning to be deep and meaningful, not surface level, we first need to activate or remind students what they already know. Not connecting students to schema can make it very difficult for students to move into the upper levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. We need to build on context to the new learning this is essential for English language Learners. KWL is a strategy to use to activate background knowledge. Learning occurs when we are active, not passive. It is very important to learn how children think and reason to set learning objectives for them. MKO (More knowledgeable Other) could support a child in achieving a level of cognition without the social interaction with parent and teacher child could not reach. When planning lesson activities is important to apply Scaffolding and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). Culture plays in important part in learning. Founds of knowledge uses students’ assets to make learning experiences more relevant and connected to the students. Using sentence frames helps English Language Learners.

I know now that the difference is fairly academic based and pretty much based on each specific type of reading. a tier 3 word in one book could be a tier 1 word in a different reading which is incredibly interesting to me.
Something else I knew a little bit about but not fully was the idea of scaffolding in the classroom and how it can help you with your lesson plans and help the development of the kids in your classroom. I have been told by my CT that she loves the way I use scaffolding, and yet I felt as if I didn't truly understand what it meant. I have learned that the way I naturally teach leans towards building upon prior knowledge, and what I have already taught. Building, and building upon these ideas until the lesson is complete, and the thought has been absorbed.
