Wixie is a publishing and creativity platform that lets students share what they know through their writing, their voice, and their art. They are using the tools in Wixie to design their own Thanksgiving card. They are enjoying the “Adventures with Mr. Wiggles” and we are building community by learning about each student and their family through these adventures. After listening to and discussing the story, students realized that they can create almost anything out of a box, as long as they put their imagination to work. Not only does the story encourage creativity, it also encourages reusing and recycling boxes. They had fun using the tools in Wixie, a publishing and creativity platform for younger students (similar to Microsoft Word or Google Docs), to create something fun and new out of a picture of a box. They used a convincing tone as each student recorded their sentence using the sentence starter, "It is not a box, it is a ________!".  The work from each class was compiled into their very own Not a Box slideshow. They learned how to navigate PebbleGo, an online research database for K-2 students. They read and listened to articles about communities and US symbols in PebbleGo and learned about digital note taking. We started with a great discussion about curiosity, with a realization that we are all genuinely and naturally curious. That was followed with some upfront work on analyzing questions, looking at what a good question looks like, and identifying great words to begin a questioning sentence. Students worked in groups to generate a list of great questions on the topic, internet safety. They have organized their Google Drive by creating and folders, moving files and documents into folders, and moving unwanted files to "trash". They are also seeing how assignments in their Google Classroom feed can also be accessed and worked on in their Drive. They experienced creating a Google Slides presentation for Hispanic Geritage month.
