Louie also has another cousin. This cousin once pulled into Mango Street in a brand new yellow Cadillac that was apparently stolen and takes the kids in the car for a joyride. The sound of sirens soon approaches and Louie's cousin crashes while trying to flee. He is taken into custody as the kids wave him goodbye.

The significance in this theme is classicism. Esperanza, who is in a lower class than Louie's cousin. She has never had the experience of being in such a nice big car as the yellow Cadillac. She is not use to such fine things and was very amazed. But than at the same time Louie’s cousin had to steal the car to be able to have such a nice thing. Kids are actually living in those kind of situations and even worse are sometimes forced to be involved in them. Its a problem in this world that is caused by poverty.
