Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

Stage 1 in Ericksons timeline is trust vs. mistrust. This stage is very important, it goes from birth until the child is about 1 year old. This is when the child learns to trust their parents and the people around them. This is by simple tasks, which are feeding the child, changing their diaper, caring for them, and them having a place to sleep. The children cant do anything at this age for themselves, so they are depending on their parents for that comfort. This stage in an infants life depends on if they are going to trust or even if they are not going to trust when they get older. In the textbook it states that "If infants are treated cruelly or their needs are not met appropriately, they will likely grow up with a sense of mistrust for people in the world" (Miller and Lang). Just within the first year of life is based off of if you are going to trust or not. In my case I was in the trust stage. I am my parents first child so all of their attention was on me. They cared for me so much, and I always had food and clothes on my back. I was also the first on my moms side, so everyone had their attention on me. I would say that I lived a pretty good life in my first year.

Stage 2 Autonomy vs. Shame

During the stage 2 autonomy vs. shame the ages of the child is 1-3 years of age. This is when the child starts to explore new things. They sometimes want to dress themselves even if it doesn't match. They want to help mom and dad in the kitchen with cooking. Or even helping their parents with anything that they are doing. The child is trying to see if they can be independent and do things on their own. "This is the "me do it" stage (Lang and Miller). Children want to do everything on their own. It may take a while longer when they do something compared to their parents, but this is how they learn. If the child learns more towards shame during this stage it could lead to low self esteem. During this stage I was in the autonomy stage. I was doing a lot of things by myself, which was getting myself dressed, feeding myself, cleaning my room, and even helping my parents.

Stage 3 Initiative vs. Guilt

Stage 3 in Eriksons timeline is initiative vs. guilt. This stage happens between the ages of 3-5. This is where the children make decisions and decide what they want to do. Its when you take initiative to do things and the child gets good feedback in return. "Initiative is also when the parents let the child explore without having any limits and then they support the child's choice" (Lang and Miller). Then guilt is when the children does a task and gets criticism from it. Children also have feelings and they are just learning new things. They are obviously going to do things wrong at certain times. Not everyone is perfect, especially when learning new things. In this stage I was going to preschool at around age 5. I was also taking the initiative to do things on my own, whether it was feeding myself, getting myself dressed, helping with my little sister, or even cleaning my room. I also know that at this stage I did end up cutting my bangs by myself.

Stage 4 Industry vs. Inferiority

Stage 4 of Eriksons timeline is industry vs. inferiority. This stage happens during the ages of 6-11. This is when a child is learning new skills. Whether its sports, learning how to read, or even a new activity that they joined. If the child doesn't feel as if they are good enough at any of these things, thats when the inferiority decides to play a role into their older years. This is also when children play with other kids. This stage is also very comparable. "This is a very active time, and a time when they are gaining a sense of how they measure up when compared with peers" (Lang and Miller). While these children are out trying new things to see if they are good at them and even like them they are also comparing themselves to others. For me during this stage I had been in elementary school. I also had started my very first sport which was softball. I obviously loved this sport because I had played it all the way up until I was 18. I don't remember comparing myself to others, but I was most likely doing that. This was when I started hanging out with my friends from elementary school, and my neighbors. I do remember always being outside, thats what we loved to do was to do anything outside. Whether it was riding bikes, roller blading, swimming, playing in the snow ect. I loved it.

Stage 5 Identity vs. Role Confusion

Stage 5 in Ericksons timeline is identity vs. role confusion. This stage usually happens between the ages of 12-18. This is the stage where we are trying to figure out who we are. New things are being tried. Its also just about learning who are you. You go through multiple different stages during this time. Like going through middle school then transferring to high school is one thing. "Adolescents struggle with questions such as "Who am I?" and "What do I want to do with my life"(Lang and Miller). Also when going through this stage is when adolescents start to choose where to go to college. They decide what they want to do with their future. When adolescents don't go through and find their identity is when they are in the stage of role confusion. If this is the case then they may not be able to find themselves even in the future, or may have trouble doing so. In my case I went through the identity stage. This is when I found my best friend, and we have been friends for over 5 years. I have also done many things to find myself which was moving two different houses between this stage. Which both changed my life. I has also found what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, and that is to be an elementary teacher.

Stage 6 Intimacy vs. Isolation

Stage 4 in Ericksons timeline is intimacy vs. isolation. This is considered the love stage. This stage happens between the ages of 19-39. This stage is either when you find the love of your life or you are isolated yourself from everyone. "After we have developed a sense of self in adolescence, we are ready to share our life with others" (Lang and Miller). It is easier to find love and share your life with someone else if you found yourself and love yourself. If that was the case where you had met the isolation stage it could be because the person had a rough time going through the stages before hand. I had decided to add a picture of my parents because I want the love that they have for each other with the person I marry. I am only 19 years old so I am just starting this stage. Predicting my future I hope to find the love of my life and start a family with that person.

Stage 7 Generativity vs. Stagnation

Stage 7 in Eriksons timeline is the generativity vs. stagnation stage. This stage happens between the ages of 40-64. This stage is when you are helping others. Whether that is raising children or even based off of the work that you do. Also caring for others is a big thing. The people in the generativity stage feel as if they are doing very good in life. Then on the other hand if someone where to go through the stagnation stage "they may have little connections with others and little interest in productivity and self-improvement" (Lang and Miller). These people feel as if they are not doing good enough. They still haven't found the job for them, or even they are having trouble in the job that they do have. In my case I hope to go through the generativity stage. I hope to have children so I would be caring for them, or even my parents if they need it. I want to be a teacher for elementary children so I would be helping them through anything that they need.

Stage 8 Integrity vs. Despair

Stage 8 of Ericksons timeline is the integrity vs despair stage. This stage happens from age 65 and up. This is the stage in life when you look back at your life. Either you will look back at your life and be very happy with the life that you lived. Or you look back at life and think that you shouldve done better. Even thinking that you missed out on doing things. These are the people who "focus on what "would have", "should have", and "could have" been" (Lang and Miller). They really think back on their whole life and wonder if they lived the right life for them. Being in this stage could cause them to be very sad thinking back on their life. I hope to go through the integrity stage. I feel that if I were to go through the despair stage if I do not find my person and get to have children. I have also wanted to have children my whole life, and I would definitely be asking myself those questions if thats how my life had went. I hope that its the opposite and I go through the integrity stage being happy with the life I lived.
