Cambodia has two weather seasons - the northeast monsoon season which runs from December through to April. The weather is hot and dry. The southwest monsoon starts in may and continues through until November. The weather remains warm but there is a lot more rain.

The graph below shows the average monthly rainfall and temperature in Cambodia, from 1931 to 1960. We can see that between the months of May and October there was a large amount of rainfall. However the rain did not cause a big difference to the temperature. Based on this graph we can assume that in the 1950' s Cambodia's climate was hot with high rainfall half of the year.

                <del>
</del> Average Monthly Temperature and Rainfall
for Cambodia from 1931-1960

Many of poor families didn't know how to read or write. In Cambodia they didn't have much of an opportunity to learn , and if so they would have to be very wealthy and with a university entrance standard. Lots of poor families never had the opportunity to send their children to school , instead they had them stay home to help earn money as they were earning just one dollar per day.
