He is the protagonist and the narrator of this story. The protagonist writes about his life story in a letter for the Chinese official Premier Jiabao, with the goal of educating the premier about entrepreneurship in India. In the letter he talks about his journey to become a successful businessman. 

Balram was born in the village of Laxmangarh, into a miserable life. He was so smart, however he was forced to leave school early to work in the tea shop of his grandmother. He was called the White Tiger, due to his intelligence. He learnt how to drive to become a chauffeur and later a successful businessman. The White Tiger was hired as a driver for Mr. Ashok, he created resentment against the upper classes, which impulse him to murder Mr. Ashok.
