Routine screening for depression is recommended by most doctors, and this is done by talking to patients during checkups for a variety of things. They may use a standard set of questions to find the symptoms of depression, although depression presents itself very differently in different people so it can be difficult to diagnose.
Typically, doctors ask for how you're feeling and if you have any major symptoms of depression, such as:
-sad or depressed mood most of the day
-loss of enjoyment in things you liked
-sleep issues
-fatigue or low energy every day
-reoccurring suicidal thoughts
-major weight change
-restlessness or sense of being run-down
-feelings of hopelessness
-problems with concentration
To be diagnosed with depression, you must have at least 5 of the above symptoms for at least two weeks.

Most of the major depressive symptoms are listed on slide 2, but there are more ways depression can be spotted.
Of course, the typical signs are things like a depressed mood almost every day, low energy, loss of interest in things, and in some cases, an inability to take care of yourself or get out of bed. Sometimes, patients will come in with physical symptoms (pain, digestive issues, sleep issues, etc.) that are recognized before the mental symptoms.
