How they used Henrietta Lack's cells

in 1951 Henrietta Lack went to a hospital called Johns Hopkins complaining of vaginal bleeding. When they examined her they found out she had a large malignant tumor on her cervix. It shows in her records that they were doing radium treatments for her cervical cancer. It was the best thing they could give her at the time. A sample of her cancer cells were taken out during a biopsy then sent to Dr. George Grey's office. He's been collecting the cells from all different patients and testing them. He discovered that her cells didn't die but others did. He also saw that they doubled every 20 to 24 hours. Dr. Gray named it HeLa after Henrietta they were used to study the effects of toxins, drugs, hormones and viruses on the growth of cancer cells without experimenting on humans. Sadly she passed away on October 4, 1951, at the age of 31, but her cells continue achieve great things. Johns Hopkins has never sold anything from the discovery of HeLa cells and the scientist knows he does not own the rights to the HeLa cell line.

The way Henrietta Lacks lived her life before she died was pretty normal for how famous she became. Henrietta Lacks was a young mother with 5 kids and married to a man named David Lacks. They got married on April 10, 1941. Henrietta Lack's mother died in 1924 giving birth to her 10th child when she was only 4 years old. She also loved the color red and she would color her nails bright red all the time.

The way Star City honored Henrietta Lacks was by building her a statue and having everyone visit it. Also, at Johns Hopkins institute each year they host a memorial lecture for Henrietta Lack's honoring her. There was also a book about her named "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Later they made the book into a movie of the same name starring Deborah Lacks.

The Lacks family found out about them using her cells in 1973. That day, Bobbette Lacks and Lawrence Lacks, the oldest of Henrietta's five children were visiting her friend. Bobbette learns that someone she knows works at the National Cancer Institute. He tells her that he has been working with cells from a woman named Henrietta Lacks in his lab for a lot of years. When she tells him that her last name is Lacks and her mother-in-law is named Henrietta Lacks Bobbette shes not thinking he is talking about her mother-in-law. She's been dead for almost twenty-five years. He insists that the cells in his lab come from a Henrietta Lacks who died from cervical cancer in the 1950's but she is shocked because that's how she died and the year she died.
